Classification Title: AST/ASO/FULL PROF Job Description: The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, invites applications for a clinical-track, full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in Large Animal Surgery. The appointee will join an experienced surgery section consisting of five ACVS board-certified clinicians. One of the five surgeons is a dedicated emergency clinician who oversees 70% of large animal after-hours emergency cases. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and proficiency in the practice of large animal surgery, including horses and farm animals. An interest in soft tissue and general surgery is preferred. The caseload is primarily referral-based, made up of about 70-80% equine and 20-30% small ruminants, camelids, and other production livestock. The large animal surgery service is based in the Alec P. and Louise H. Courtelis Equine Teaching Hospital on the main campus of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville. The hospital is fully equipped with dedicated colic, soft tissue, orthopedic, and standing surgery ORs, full complement of soft tissue and orthopedic surgical equipment including Haico Pro 3 surgery table with 4-way tilt, laparoscopy, Ligasure and Caiman bipolar vessel sealing devices, a variety of 1, 1.5, and 3m flexible endoscopes, CO2 and diode laser, electrochemotherapy unit, and service specific C-arm fluoroscopy. A 1.5T high-field MRI, The Steinbrenner Family C.T. Imaging Suite, nuclear scintigraphy suite, and 2 large digital radiography suites are located within the large animal hospital immediately adjacent to the surgery area. In addition, there is a podiatry suite with dedicated digital radiography, service specific digital ultrasound, a selection of climate-controlled stalls, a large, covered arena with concrete and sand/synthetic footing for under saddle evaluation, and overground endoscopy. Faculty laboratories also provide high speed treadmill, 3-D printing, and sterile hood for preparation of biologic therapies. In addition to the large animal surgery faculty there are 6 large animal DACVIM, 8 anesthesia faculty (6 DACVAA and 2 DECVAA), 6 DACVR one of which has equine diagnostic imaging designation, 4 DACT, and 3 DACVO serving the large animal hospital in addition to full laboratory support and added specialties within the small animal hospital available to consult as needed (ie. dermatology, cardiology, neurology, etc.). The University of Florida Veterinary Hospital at the World Equestrian Center (WEC) in Ocala, Florida is an added source of diagnostic and treatment modalities to equine patients in the UF system and serves as an elective and emergency surgical referral source for the Gainesville hospital. The UF at WEC hospital is focused on sports medicine, diagnostic imaging, and rehabilitation services with 3 ACVSMR faculty also holding ACVS, ECVS, and ACVIM certifications. A 40-minute drive from Gainesville, this facility expands upon the diagnostic capabilities available to our patients to include Qalibra large bore CT with standing imaging capability, Hallmarq standing MRI, and PET scan. The World Equestrian Center in Ocala is a new world class facility with 3000 stalls and numerous indoor climate controlled and outdoor arenas providing equestrian competition across a variety of disciplines year-round. Opportunities for faculty to hold practice days at WEC in a developed special area of expertise may exist. Florida boasts the third largest horse population and is home to a thriving equine industry spanning all disciplines of equine activities, generating an $11.7 billion annual state economic impact. While opportunities for equestrian recreation and competition abound, Florida also offers a wide variety of entertainment and recreational activities. Gainesville is growing with abundant dining and entertainment options yet is surrounded by public lands for recreation and the wide-open countryside. A 1.5 – 2-hour drive will take you to the gulf or atlantic coasts and 3 major city centers with shopping, professional sports, theater, concerts, amusment parks, and fine dining. As some would say, “I’m from Florida, where we vacation in other parts of Florida!”. The appointee would be assigned 60-75% of their time in clinics. Duties include management of referral and direct access surgery cases, day-time emergency surgical support, and providing consultations to other services as required. Participation in a shared after-hours roster to fill the 30% of after-hours remaining after coverage by our emergency clinician is expected. Teaching responsibilities include involvement in the large animal surgery clerkship and other relevant courses in the professional curriculum. Active participation in the residency and internship training programs and the contribution to the improvement of clinical instruction and service is expected. Opportunities for independent or collaborative research activities exist. The appointee is expected to be involved in professional outreach, committee service, and curriculum development.
