Job Description:

Paediatric training in Tasmania offers a wealth of paediatric specialty and sub-specialty experiences, working with a large supportive and expanding team, and opportunities to explore the beautiful state of lutruwita through work-life balance.

Tasmania is highly sought out as an entry point to Paediatric training for the Royal Australia College of Physicians. The statewide training program offers a wealth of experiences for trainees with broad exposures to general paediatrics and subspecialities within a closely consultant-supervised team. Positions are available for first year trainees, beginning their exposure to paediatrics or those seeking paediatric experience for other training programs (e.g. general practice), through to more experienced trainees on their way to preparing for college exams. Supervision is provided through consultant paediatricians, and trainee mentorship is available through a large and growing advanced training program within Tasmania (see separate recruitment campaign).

We are very proud to offer paediatric basic trainees the opportunity to meet all their training requirements to complete Basic Training within 3 years with available rotations in general paediatrics, emergency paediatric medicine, paediatric subspecialities, rural rotations within Tasmania and negotiated positions with interstate tertiary hospitals (See below). These positions are accredited by the RACP for basic training in General Paediatrics. LGH and NWRH are both accredited for rural training when on rotation from Hobart.

The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is the major paediatric and neonatal referral service, as well as the major university teaching hospital for Tasmania. The RHH has a 32 bed paediatric and adolescent wards, including 4 short-stay unit and 4 high dependency unit. It also has a 12 bed Neonatal and Paediatric ICU (NPICU) and is co-located with a 16 bed Special Care Nursery. The units are staffed 24 hours a day by registrars and residents with in-house consultant cover during working hours and on call overnight. There is a very large outpatient service. The Department of Paediatrics is managed by a team of Staff and VMO Specialists in Neonatology, Neonatal and Paediatric Emergency Transport, Paediatric Intensive Care, Paediatric Endocrinology, Neurology, Oncology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Community Paediatrics, Paediatric Surgery, Child Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine and General Paediatrics.

Launceston General Hospital (LGH) includes a 34 bed General Paediatric ward including short-stay unit, 12 bed Level-2 neonatal nursery and Paediatric outpatients. The unit is staffed 24 hours a day by registrars and HMO staff, with consultant oversight on site during working hours, and on call overnight. The unit is accredited by the RACP for Advanced Training for General Paediatrics with a Perinatal Component, Community/ Developmental Paediatrics and rural rotations.

North-west regional hospital (NWRH) in Burnie includes a 12 bed General Paediatric ward and a 8 bed neonatal intensive care with 2 special care nursery beds. There is an active outpatient department with excellent clinic exposure during your rotation. The unit is staffed 24 hours a day by registrars and HMO staff, with consultant oversight.

The wellbeing of trainees is a top priority for the paediatric department. The Tasmanian paediatric training program aims to provide individualised training pathways to best meet a trainee’s needs, including considering part-time and job-sharing opportunities. Each trainee is provided with college supervisors and mentorship is highly encouraged within the department. Tasmania boasts an active Doctors in Training network and each hospital has their own Resident’s Society for both professional support and social opportunities.

General Paediatric Registrar

There are multiple general paediatric registrar positions available to both Basic and Advanced trainees in General Paediatrics, as well as for doctors seeking immersive exposure to general paediatrics for other specialities such as general practice. The role primarily involves the care of children through in-patient care and outpatient services.

Certain specific rotations are offered at the time job offer, general rotations are determined based on clinical need and preferences.

Rotations are offered in:

  • Inpatient general paediatrics at Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH), Launceston General Hospital and Northwest Regional Hospital
  • Neonatal & Paediatric Intensive care at RHH
  • Paediatric Emergency at RHH
  • Paediatric Ambulatory Care at RHH
  • Paediatric Surgery at RHH
  • Paediatric sub-specialty at RHH, generally including Oncology, Respiratory, Diabetes, Endocrinology, Neurology

Basic Training Position

A successful applicant to the basic training position would be granted a 3-year position. Rotations will include a combination of the above rotations.

The Tasmanian Paediatric Training Program has long-standing relationships with both Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide and the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. Each of these sites offer some of our trainees tertiary training spots which you may be eligible for in your 3rd year of basic training.

‘Streamed’ positions are available which guarantee all of the required training rotations within 3 years. If you are selected for this, you will be informed on offer of your position. However, in the vast majority of cases, basic trainees can complete all of their basic training needs within the 3 years, as a combination of rotations through the Tasmanian Paediatric Training Program and the site they attend as a tertiary site.

Note: Adjustments to this program may be made on request on an individual basis within the capacity of the RHH Program. Progression each year is reviewed based on performance, and continued funding of all posts.

Salary

$131,000 per annum

Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

Period of Employment

Fixed term, full time day work working 76 hours per fortnight (+10 hours protected training time) commencing 3 February 2025 until 2 February 2026. (In some cases a 24-month contract may be negotiated at employment)

Duties

The Registrar is responsible for the day-to-day management of private & public inpatients/outpatients and provides afterhours emergency cover at the hospital as determined by the Medical Workforce Unit.

Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer of any new criminal convictions and/or if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.

  • General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements).
