Institution Description:

The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS) will solve fundamental and applied scientific problems by harnessing the disruptive concept of meta-optics – a field pioneered in Australia. TMOS aims to overcome complex challenges in light generation, manipulation and detection at the nanoscale, thereby aligning optics with the advances in nanoelectronics.

Electronic devices have changed the way we live our lives in the twenty-first century. This was made possible through scientific and industrial advances in electronic materials and devices at the nanoscale. However, science and industry have not made the same advances in the field of optics. We are still relying on the same millennia-old principles and technologies discovered by the Ancient Greeks and Chinese, particularly in the area of lenses, to integrate optics into our electronic devices. Optics is fast becoming the rate-limiting factor in the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0).
