Job Description:

Following an announcement by the Tasmanian Government, a Public Health Direction was issued on 10 September 2021 requiring that all Health Workers are vaccinated against COVID-19. This step is critical in protecting both our health workforce and vulnerable Tasmanians in our care.

Applicants for any position within the Department of Health must be prepared to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of their employment.

The Department of Health is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Head of Department - General Medicine vacancy.

The Head of Department General Medicine provides leadership to the Department of General Medicine, working under the governance of the Clinical and Nursing Directors of the Acute Medical Stream.

The General Medical team is a dynamic team who provide the clinical care for the largest cohort of unscheduled care in the Royal Hobart Hospital.

The applicant is to have high level leadership skills and the ability to work within in a multi-disciplinary team environment.


A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicants dependent on clinical experience and seniority.


Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.

Period of Employment

Fixed term part-time day work (with on-call), working 57 hours per fortnight commencing 13 December 2021 for a period of three (3) years.


Department of General Medicine, Royal Hobart Hospital

Essential Requirements:

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements)

*Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered

Primary Purpose:

  • Under the broad direction of the Clinical Director and in collaboration with the Nursing, Allied Health and Operational Leads, provide effective leadership and strategic and operational management enabling the achievement of objectives relevant to the clinical unit.
  • In collaboration with the local management team and in accordance with Agency policy directions, service standards and financial targets, provide a high level of strategic and clinical influence, to ensure:
    • the highest standards of service delivery are achieved
    • resources are efficiently utilised
    • services are effectively integrated within the Agency
  • Provide the Clinical Director with high quality and authoritative advice on clinical services and support in meeting key strategic and operational outcomes.
