Job Description:

Lab Management 40%

1. Placing and receiving orders for general lab supplies (reagents, enzymes, radioisotopes, labware, etc.) and equipment.

2. Keeping inventory of lab chemicals including organic solvents, inorganic acids, and hazardous chemicals, biohazard material, and radioisotopes. In addition, this position will be responsible for arranging the disposal of chemical, biohazard, and radioactive waste.

3. Keeping the general organization of the lab.

4. Ensuring the maintenance of lab equipment and plant growth facilities associated with the lab.

5. Position will provide professional support to grow and maintain biological material (plants, bacteria, fungi, plant viruses) as required by the research program.

6. Coordinate lab activities of OPS hires.

Research Activities 50%

1. Position will conduct, under limited supervision, research in the areas of plant physiology, biochemistry, genetics, and plant molecular biology. This research will involve, but will not be limited to, the use of the following techniques: isolation and purification of proteins and nucleic acids; analysis of these macromolecules by various techniques (immunology, chromatography, electrophoresis, radiolabeling, PCR, etc.).

2. The position will be required to record in a laboratory notebook all experimental activities, observations and results. The use of computers will be required to maintain records of lab procedures and to analyze data.

Expected Salary:

$45,000 - $52,000

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and seven years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and five years of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of laboratory procedures in bacteriology, biochemistry, and plant molecular biology.

Skilled in the manipulation of radioisotopes and biohazard materials

Skilled in the use of computers

Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing)

Ability to record, tabulate classify and interpret laboratory results.
