Following an announcement by the Tasmanian Government, a Public Health Direction was issued on 10 September 2021 requiring that all Health Workers are vaccinated against COVID-19. This step is critical in protecting both our health workforce and vulnerable Tasmanians in our care.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Staff Specialist – Psychiatrist who will work as part of the MSH team across the North West Region. Servicing a population of approximately 116,000, the THS – North West Region has major sites located approximately 50km apart.

This position will be attractive to a highly skilled and motivated medical professional who views challenges as opportunities and is driven by a passion to improve healthcare in the complex world of modern health systems. The right applicant will play a key role in developing health care at both patient and system levels. Experience with Inpatient Mental Health, Adult Community Mental Health Services and/or Crisis Assessment Mental Health will be highly regarded.

The successful candidate will provide specialist diagnosis, treatment and care for public patients. They will provide a consultative service in Psychiatry to other disciplines and to other health services in the area.

Mental Health Services located on the North West region of Tasmania incorporate Inpatient Mental Health, Adult Community Mental Health, Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Older Persons Mental Health and Crisis and Assessment Treatment Team Mental Health Services.

The Inpatient Mental Health Service is located at the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) in Burnie. The unit has 19 inpatient beds and a 3 bedded High Care Unit. The unit predominantly caters to adult clients with serious mental illness but also supports clients from the Older Persons mental health service and occasionally adolescents. The Inpatient team also provides a Consult-Liaison service to the general wards and occasionally the emergency department within the NWRH.

Adult Community Mental Health provides an Outpatient Consultancy service located in both Burnie and Devonport (approx. 50 minutes apart) on the North West coast.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) provide a busy Outpatient service which is located in Burnie on the North West Coast and attend to assessments of CAMHS clients presented to the NWRH Emergency Department.

Older Persons Mental Health provides both an Outpatient and Hospital based service. Outpatient services are located in Burnie and the serving of hospital based patients at both the NWRH and the Mersey Community Hospital (MCH), again approx. 50 minutes apart.

Crisis and Assessment Treatment Team Mental Health Services are based in Burnie however are required to attend service both the NWRH and MCH.

The position/s provides an on call service after hours and weekends.

The Tasmanian Health Service – North West Region participates in a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate clinical training program with the Rural Clinical School. THS – North West has a close working relationship with the University of Tasmania and the successful candidate may wish to explore an opportunity to be appointed to a University academic position. The seniority of the University appointment would be negotiated separately with the University.

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant/s dependent on clinical experience and seniority


Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019

• Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.

It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change.
