Job Description:

Classification Title:

Engineer II

Job Description:

The Department of Physics is seeking an Engineer II. The Engineer II is a highly specialized position that requires design capabilities and knowledge of all facets of precision machining and assembly of apparatus. This position requires the individual to be highly skilled in many areas of engineering, and fabrication of prototype, one-of-a-kind scientific equipment needed for research groups within the Department of Physics. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides engineering support for faculty, students, and other engineering staff (electronic and cryogenics) in the conceptual design, assembly, and maintenance of prototype research equipment for the Department of Physics, including ultra-high vacuum vessels involving specialized materials and welding techniques, low-temperature cryostats for the MicroKelvin Laboratory using unique designs still in the development stage and high-cost materials such as high purity pure silver and gold, apparatuses for high magnetic field use at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory involving non-ferrous materials throughout. Coordinate and prepare working drawings, selections of proper materials and components needed for such projects.
  • Responsible for designing and fabricating a prototype, one-of-a-kind scientific equipment for research groups within the Department of Physics. Parts must be made to very tight tolerances (± .0002) out of a variety of unique, special to physics materials. Parts include flanges produced to exacting specifications and tolerances used in the low-temperature MicroKelvin Laboratory and for the physics contribution to the U.S.-wide inter-university collaboration to detect gravity waves (LIGO).
  • Advise faculty of engineering practices needed to design special apparatuses, consult with faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students in areas of safety, proper shop practices, general machining, instrument design, and fabrication, including the instruction of students in machine shop course.
  • Responsible for proper safety, maintenance, and repair of machine shop facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Expected Salary:

The salary range is $51,500 - $62,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma or equivalent and six years of relevant experience; Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience; or Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Ability to use all conventional and computerized machine shop equipment and machine parts to close tolerances (± .0005).
  2. Knowledge of specialized research apparatus.
  3. Ability to run CNC equipment, part programming, part set-up, and modern tooling design.
  4. Ability to efficiently run EDM machine including electrode fabrication, design, and special fixturing.
  5. Skill in machining exotic materials, i.e. silver, platinum, tantalum, titanium, etc.
  6. Ability to weld and solder combinations of different materials, i.e. stainless steel, copper, and brass. Knowledge of joint designs and clearances.
  7. Must be able to interpret all forms of blueprints and mechanical drawings.
  8. Knowledge of machinery repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  9. This is a hands-on position requiring exceptional manual dexterity and occasional physical strength to handle/move/position large metal stock, parts, and assemblies.
  10. Must be able to work with diverse faculty and student populations.
  11. Effective communication skills and teaching techniques are important.
