Job Description:

This Biological Scientist position assigned to the University of Florida / Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) Everglades Research and Education Center (EREC) in Belle Glade, Florida with primary workstation at the USDA-ARS Sugarcane Field Station in Canal Point, Florida has field, greenhouse, laboratory, and computer duties. The major research activities to be supported are to: 1. Coordinate inoculations for screening of sugarcane clones in the CP Cultivar Development Program to obtain disease ratings; 2. Rate disease symptoms and collect plant and tissue samples, process samples serologically; 3. Plant, map and maintain experimental populations of sugarcane; 4. extract DNA and RNA; run PCR and gel; collect, tabulate, and analyze data.

Coordinates disease screens and inoculations in CP Cultivar Development Program for the sugarcane diseases.

Rate disease symptoms in field on naturally infected plants and in inoculated tests. Also assist in collecting and processing samples for serological and molecular assays.

Plant, map, maintain and develop populations of sugarcane for research; this will entail collecting agronomic and disease evaluations on the individual clones (genotypes) for the CP program.

Collect, tabulate, maintain and analyze data for pathology program.

*This is a grant-funded time-limited position.

Advertised Salary:

$17.50 hourly

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related life science field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of plant biology or more specialized area dealing with plant pathology. Prior experience in agronomic row crops, agrochemicals, conducting field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments preferred. Computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet, statistical software) required. Efficient communication skills (both oral and written) are necessary.
