OPS Laboratory Technician

Job Description:
  • Work closely with the CTSI Biorepository Regulatory Staff in order to determine consented patients going for surgery and assist in collecting blood from pre-surgical center when needed
  • Assess the status of sample shipments upon arrival, record relevant information on the appropriate forms, enter data on the OnCore database, store the specimens in appropriate locations, and generate appropriate reports to be sent back to recipient sites according to the appropriate SOPs
  • Establish and manage a strong, effective working relationship with multiple clinical and research departments within Shands and the UF College of Medicine such as Operation Room, Pathology Gross Room, and the Molecular Core Pathology as well as outside collaborators and customers
  • Assist in the writing and editing of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and developing of forms used for CTSI Biorepository Laboratory processes. Perform all laboratory processes according to relevant issued SOP and document all data on appropriate forms. Write deviations if processes not performed according to the issued SOP
  • Coordinate with UF surgeons, surgery staff and Gross Room staff to acquire tissue samples,
  • Sample pick-up and delivery from the Operating Room to the Surgical Pathology Grossing Lab when necessary
  • Sample pickup from other locations within the health system
  • Dissecting and preserving human tissue specimens as specified in Standard Operating Procedures
  • Extracting, processing and storing blood, blood products, urine, and nucleic acids according to established Standard Operating Procedures
  • Verifying processes undertaken by other Biorepository staff members
  • Specimen inventory management using the database systems within the Biorepository
  • Sample storage, withdrawal and distribution within and outside UF that requires appropriate training
  • Provide information to investigators on inventory, specimens and processes related to their studies
  • Provide excellent customer service to investigators by assisting with requested services including distributing specimens according to the relevant SOP
  • Other tasks relating to the operation of the Biorepository including general laboratory maintenance
  • Meet all safety requirements for handling hazardous biological materials and maintain OSHA, HIPPA, CITI and EH&S standards
  • Monitor and document instrument/equipment performance used in the CTSI Biorepository Laboratory. Assist in daily, weekly, monthly maintenance and schedule calibration of all necessary equipment according to GLP Standards. File CTSI Biorepository documents in the appropriate locations
  • Maintain up to date inventory for the CTSI Biorepository supplies
Expected Salary:

$10.00 – $15.00 per hour; commensurate within this range based on education and experience

Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization or a high school diploma and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Lab experience working with human tissue, blood, and other fluids.
  • Familiar with laboratory standard operating procedures and following scientific protocols
  • Communication skills which will allow the employee to interact with UF physicians, clients, and other health professionals in a professional manner. Experience working in research laboratory environment highly preferred.
  • Analytical ability to assist in the development of standard operating procedures
  • Organizational skills to maintain flow of laboratory processes and track multiple studies and clients simultaneously
  • Communication skills necessary to interact with all levels of staff (investigators, physicians, OR staff, administrators, gross room staff, technicians, etc.) and external governing agencies
  • Ability to oversee laboratory projects and develop processes and procedures aligned with intended Biorepository outcomes
  • Knowledge and understanding of human anatomy and physiology preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and potentially stressful environment
  • Research-based experience preferred
