Job Description:

The Department of Health is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist – Trauma (522705) vacancy.

The Staff Specialist - Trauma will support the growth and sustainment of the Trauma Service working with the Head of Trauma and be delegated strategic and operational responsibilities within the Surgical and Perioperative Stream at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH)


A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.
In addition subject to approval from PPS (Private Patient scheme) 35% of base salary and on call will be paid.

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.


Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Services) Award

Period of Employment

Permanent part-time day work, working 38 hours per fortnight commencing 4 October 2021.

Essential Requirements

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty*

*An Australian qualification in a specialty relevant to major trauma care recognised by the Australian Medical Council is an Essential Qualification required for this position. These specialties include FRACS, FACEM, FANZCA, and FCICM.

Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Management qualifications or substantial managerial experience at senior manager or executive level
  • Significant clinical and operational experience as a practicing clinician in major trauma services
  • Experience in related fields including, but not limited to, retrieval medicine, major burns care, medical education (including simulation) and research


  • Support the growth and development of the Trauma Service, in order to provide consistent, safe, effective, evidence based and patient-centred policy and practice.
  • Provide specialist consultant services in trauma.
  • Identify and implement trauma work practice reforms, including Trauma Verification requirements, to achieve integrated patient care across the continuum and utilise consumer input to improve services to patients.
  • Support the governance and operations of the Trauma Service.

d. crimes involving dishonesty

2. Identification check

3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check.
