The Crop Biotechnology lab at University of Florida, headed by Fredy Altpeter is seeking candidates who are efficient in multi-tasking and time management, work well with others, pay attention to detail, are experienced with ordering lab supplies, processing of invoices, record keeping, lab safety compliance and have a desire to learn new skills. The position requires working 40 hours per week, which may include weekends. We are looking for individuals with exceptional performance skills, such as: self-motivation, meticulous attention to detail, honesty, dependability, adaptability, must be able to lift 50lbs. Examples of specific tasks: The candidate will ensure that needed supplies are available, placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies, processing of orders, monitoring compliance with biosafety regulations, maintain safe operation of equipment, schedule equipment maintenance and repair; initiate and monitor plant tissue cultures under aseptic conditions, prepare culture media, use and monitor laboratory instrumentation, collecting and handling samples from greenhouse or field grown plants, DNA isolation, PCR, electrophoresis, extensive documentation, project review, report preparation, regeneration of plants from tissue cultures and transfer to soil, monitoring of irrigation, fertilization and temperature control in greenhouses, plant propagation, pasteurization of soil, devitalization of plants by autoclaving, monitoring of pests and diseases in the greenhouse and field, harvesting plots or greenhouse trails, processing samples and recording data.

The research program focuses on designing feedstocks for biofuels and bioproducts using the “plants as factories” concept in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Research Center CABBI https://cabbi.bio/research/feedstocks-theme/

Expected Salary:

$12.00 - $13.00/hour depending on education and experience

Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma and 2 years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:BS in plant science or related area, previous experience with administrative tasks (e.g. purchasing). Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite as well as database programs and content editing. Training with lab skills will be provided. This work requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English as well as excellent writing skills. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply. We will support J1 visa applications.
