Job Description:

We are looking to recruit a User Support Bioinformatician to join the Data Coordination and Archiving Team. The post holder will be working alongside the team’s Biocurators, Bionformaticians and Software Engineers to support our broad user base in the use of our data resources and services. 

Your work will center upon submissions and validation services for data handled by the Data Coordination and Archiving team, including in particular those submitted to the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA). Main responsibilities will be:
  1. The delivery of expert support to users of our web and programmatic interfaces through our Helpdesk, as well as standards development and integration work.
  2. The preparation and delivery of user training, including documentation, courses and webinars.
  3. You will also contribute to the EASI-Genomics project (https://www.easi-genomics.eu/home), which provides fully funded access to more than 150 transnational access projects selected through public calls. You will support the brokering of non-human data from the TNA projects into the ENA.
In addition, you will contribute to several of our collaborative data coordination projects, including those around biodiversity genomics, metagenomics and pathogen surveillance.

Your work will be carried out in close communication with our international base of submitters and will involve giving advice on data submission requirements and protocols, data validation and processing and integration of the submitted data with assembly, project, sample and other high-level information. You will be expected to work with a diverse range of submitters and to contribute to the development of data standards. Helpdesk staff are required to take an active part in the development and delivery of ENA and data coordination services, publishing and attending and presenting at internal and international meetings.

You will also have the opportunity to work closely with Software Engineers who design and develop ENA’s submission pipelines. The Data Coordination and Archiving Team maintains close collaborations with both data submitters and those retrieving data and offers extensive Helpdesk facilities. You will be part of the public face of ENA and will be expected to promote the use of our services and to participate in outreach.

You will have a broad knowledge of molecular biology, possessing a university degree in the life sciences and a relevant postgraduate qualification.
