Job Description:

The Biological Scientist III is a senior-level position. The Biological Scientist will rely on expertise to 1. Develop/Edit protocols to improve existing techniques or to incorporate new diagnostic procedures; 2. Oversee their execution assigned experiments; 3. Review, approve or interpret scientific results; 4. Manage the rodent colony and conduct procedures as necessary; 5. present researching findings to PI and at laboratory meetings; 6. Maintain laboratory safety programs and train personnel in laboratory safety techniques; and 7. Actively participate in the writing of grants, papers, and statements of work.

The Biological Scientist III must be able to perform the following essential functions:

Histological Work/Analysis:

Collecting organs/tissues and embedding the specimens for sectioning either with a microtome or cryotome (for frozen sections). Following preparation of slides with sectioned tissue, staining with standard histology stains such as H&E, and immunohistochemistry will be done. Participate in the image capture and analysis of tissue following intervention studies. Activity includes treating mice, collecting tissue, and processing it for analysis.

Molecular Techniques and Analysis:

Molecular cloning, Plasmid purification, Primer design, RNA and DNA isolation, isolating RNA, and performing real-time PCR, and PCR genotyping of transgenic mouse lines. Participating in in-vitro studies exploring novel vectors in various cells. Activities may include expansion/maintenance of cell lines and analysis of transfection/infection. Performing protein analysis by isolating a protein of interest from cell or tissue lysates and performing/analyzing western blots.

Animal Studies:

Handling mice for setting up timed matings, weaning animals, and maintaining the colony. Participating in treating animals with pharmacological agents or AAV vectors either through i.p., i.m., or i.v. injection. Other duties with the mice may include survival surgery, behavioral tests, perfusion, tissue dissection, bleeding procedures, echocardiography, sensory and motor function, force mechanics, proteomics, and metabolic studies. Plays a key role in regulatory management (IACUCs).

Research Project Coordination / Laboratory Management:

Coordinating ongoing research projects and/or collaborations. Monitoring equipment for operational excellence and provide routine maintenance. Ensuring that the laboratory has the appropriate supplies on-site to meet scientific timeline needs.

Regulatory Compliance:

Ensuring that the laboratory is compliant with governing rules and regulations. Coordinating all IACUC and IRB (exempt) submissions/renewals. Ensuring adherence to all applicable EH&S standards. Training/ensuring new laboratory members on compliance standards.


Perform tasks and experiments as directed by the Principal Investigator

Expected Salary:

$46,000-$55,000 per year; commensurate within this range based on qualifications and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related field and seven years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree in biology or a closely related field and five years of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in molecular biology techniques.

Animal colony management and handling of rodents experience.

Advanced degree in related scientific field.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. Nights & weekends as needed for on-going research.
