Job Description:

The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist position in the Department of General Surgery at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).

The RHH is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania, and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania Medical School. The Hospital provides most specialist medical services for the region or state.

This role has been established to improve the delivery of General Surgical services to patients and assist in the co-ordination and training of surgical Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) and Registrars.

Applications are sought from qualified General Surgeons with an interest in sub-specialty practice, along with ongoing involvement in management of acute / emergency and trauma cases. Post-Fellowship training in one or more of: Colorectal, Upper GI, Bariatric, Breast, Endocrine, or Trauma Surgery is desirable.

There is ample opportunity to be involved with

  • other teaching and research activities, including collaboration and/or formal involvement with the University of Tasmania and other institutions.
  • Administrative activities, committees and working groups within the RHH.

Salary

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicants dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Classification

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.

Period of Employment

Permanent full-time or part-time day worker, working various hours up to 76 hours per fortnight (with on-call) commencing as soon as possible.

Duties

The Staff Specialist – General Surgery will provide quality specialist and subspecialty medical services to the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) within the limits of specified clinical privileges

In the role Staff Specialist – General Surgery you will:

  • Provide quality specialist and sub-specialty services in General Surgery.
  • Provide inpatient and outpatient care to public and private patients of the Royal Hobart Hospital in General Surgery.
  • Be involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Be involved in research.
  • Undertake quality improvement activities.

Essential Requirements

  • Specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty.

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer.

The following checks are to be conducted:

1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
a) Crimes of Violence
b) Sex Related Offences
c) Serious Drug Offences
d) Crimes involving dishonesty
2. Identification check
3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check
