Job Description:

As a Veterinary Technician Specialist in our Emergency and Critical Care Service at the University of Florida Veterinary Hospitals, there is a higher responsibility expected in not only the knowledge and technical skill in the area of specialty but in higher education and teaching of others. In this position, you will work with veterinarians, students, fellow veterinary technicians/nurses, and assistants to provide patient care and administrative support in our emergency and critical care service. Work will be under the direction of a manager as well as supportive oversight from veterinarians. The individual will perform and teach advanced critical care nursing skills and utilize critical care knowledge when performing nursing care and triage to our ECC patients. The individual is responsible for service-specific tasks with an emphasis on teaching and training of veterinary technicians/nurses, technician assistants, veterinary students, interns and residents.

An individual in this position must possess excellent communication skills and be proactive in determining the needs of the hospital. A successful applicant should enjoy learning new things and can quickly adapt to a changing environment. They need to possess a good base knowledge of veterinary medicine and express a positive attitude in their daily work. The individual must be able to communicate effectively, demonstrate critical thinking and professionalism.

This is a full-time, benefited position and is considered essential personnel. A post-offer education verification, background check, and health assessment are required.

Nursing Care

The focus of nursing care is to deliver high quality patient care by assisting the veterinarians and students in an efficient, timely, and professional manner. The expectation is that the individual will communicate effectively with the service to determine the needs and priorities for the day, displaying a positive and proactive attitude while also knowing when to ask for help or guidance when needed. Patients should be handled compassionately with the goal to prevent and alleviate fear, anxiety, and stress during their visit.

Examples include, but are not limited to:
• Assist in providing clinical support to doctors and other technicians/nurses
• Provide restraint of patients without risk to patient, self, and others.
• Abide by appropriate hospital SOPS for infection control when handling patients, providing interventions/treatments and processing/performing diagnostic testing.
• Provide high quality nursing care to critically ill patients based on attention to detail
• Utilize monitoring equipment and recognize trends
• Assist with clinical procedures and offer direction to others.
• Maintain a clean and organized work environment
• Participates in CE for the purpose of personal development and development of a critical care mindset
• Foster effective communication with both internal and external clients and rDVMs.
• Induction, maintenance ,monitoring anesthesia for ICU procedures
• Monitoring of anesthetic recovery and post procedure analgesia
• Teach Hospital, Pharmacy and ECC technical procedures and protocols and pharmacy
• Oversee the scheduling and flow of patient care and non-patient care responsibilities. Lead by example and support decisions made by teammates.
• Model appropriate stress management in a tumultuous environment
• Provide training and instruction to ECC techs and house officers on specialized procedures and diagnostic testing as relevant to service needs and specialty certification
• Run diagnostics on Point of Care machines, correlate results with the clinical presentation of the patient and notify clinicians with results.

Triage

Promote patient safety and quality care by ensuring each patient presenting to the triage service is treated as if it was your own cherished pet. Strive to be an effective and empathetic communicator with our clients, with the intent to inspire their trust in our team’s ability to provide compassionate, high quality veterinary care for their beloved family member. Respectfully address all hospital personnel involved in implementing diagnostics and interventions for our emergency patients and recognize the value of a cohesive team.
Examples of work include but are not limited to the following:
• Performing triage assessments and prioritizing cases as they present
• Manage the ER whiteboard system by assigning students and clinicians to cases as they present and coordinate timely interventions as needed
• Abide by appropriate hospital SOPS for infection control when handling patients, providing interventions/treatments and processing/performing diagnostic testing.
• Communicate effectively with clients in regards to the status of their pets and home care
• Placing intravenous catheters, performing laboratory diagnostics
• Performing abdominal and thoracic radiographs
• assisting with examinations
• Inducing, maintaining, and monitoring anesthesia for ER procedures
• Recovering patients from anesthesia
• Performing nursing care of all patients presenting to the ER
• Run diagnostics on Point of Care machines correlate results with the clinical presentation of the patient and notify clinicians with results.
• Assisting the ER clinicians with providing instruction and demonstration of emergency medicine skills to veterinary students, interns and residents in a clinical setting.
• Assist students with accomplishing the necessary student learning objectives
• Develop professional relationships with the CSR team to aid in providing outstanding customer service to all ER clients
• Enter charges for all triage patients and document treatment sheets

Teaching and Mentoring

The focus of teaching and mentoring is to provide an opportunity for others to learn by creating a safe and welcoming environment and building cohesive relationships amongst all individuals. Promoting further education and development is achieved by fostering teamwork, positivity, respect, and trust along with creating a culture of constructive dialogue by inviting thoughts and new ideas for discussion. Veterinary students, technician interns, shadowing technician students, assistants, and volunteers are all examples of individuals that can benefit from teaching and mentoring efforts. Delivery methods include oral, written, and digital platforms.

Examples include, but are not limited to:
• Promote patient advocacy by assisting new technicians with developing strong patient assessment skills and treatment plans reviews utilizing the Kirby’s rule of 20.
• Assist new ECC technicians, in learning ECC techniques, protocols and procedures such as venipuncture, intravenous and urinary catheter placements, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, fluid therapy, monitoring recovery and pre and post-operative analgesia and pharmacology knowledge.
• Provide feedback to the ECC manager on the progress and work performance of new technicians in training
• Assist the ECC manager and hospital training manager with developing training tools, assessment tests and templates for providing feedback both to new technicians and the managers
• Assist new technicians and ECC residents and interns in learning advanced nursing skills such as placing central lines, monitoring critically ill patients, calculating and using CRIs, performing and monitoring blood product transfusions. Setting up the mechanical ventilations and performing nursing care for these patients, etc.
• Communicate effectively with clinicians, students and technicians regarding patient status, changes in treatment plans etc.
• Work with teammates to develop their abilities to see the ICU/Triage services from a global perspective and assist them with devising and implementing a strategy for accomplishing all patient care and nursing shift responsibilities
• Teach new technicians and veterinary student s how to document patient treatment sheets and triage sheets appropriately and professionally and to formulate clear, concise nursing summaries on ICU patient’s treatment sheets
• Assist new technicians with developing their nursing process to enable each individual discover the most effective and efficient way to accomplish patient care, student teaching and clinician support.
• Conduct didactic rounds with the day and night nursing teams at least once weekly and provide insight and instruction to the ECC technicians on how nursing rounds and patient hand offs can be improved.
• Assist the ECC technicians with learning proper phone etiquette and how to effectively communicate with clients and front desk personnel
• Foster honest and open communication with team members
• Endeavor to recognize and use the diverse knowledge and skills of every team member to promote synergy and cohesive teamwork.
• Recognize and manage time snares to ensure maximum productivity in the ECC dept.

Hospital Cleanliness

The focus of hospital cleanliness is to provide an uncompromising level of cleanliness throughout the facilities while creating a safe and accident-free environment. This will ensure the ability to maintain a productive, organized service in preparation to attend to clients and patients as well as preventing infection and cross contamination. The overall aesthetics of the hospital is a direct reflection on the high-quality care we provide so it is important the areas are kept in pristine condition. Areas to maintain include designated department/service treatment rooms and exams rooms along with communal areas when needed.

Examples include, but are not limited to:
• Sweeping and mopping floors daily and as needed
• Taking out trash and recyclables as needed
• Ensuring cages and runs including drains, grates, and doors are cleaned daily and as needed
• Assisting with processing laundry as needed
• Disinfecting and cleaning equipment regularly
• Maintaining equipment within the hospital as applicable to this position and reporting broken or malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate manager
• Reporting broken or malfunctioning infrastructure to the appropriate manager and requesting work orders as directed
• Maintaining inventory and replenishing stock on a regular basis
• Checking drug and supply expiration dates as needed
• Practicing appropriate infection control measures by managing biohazardous patient care items and lab specimens appropriately

Professional Development & Continuing Education

The focus of professional development & continuing education is to ensure an individual continues to increase and develop their knowledge and skills. To be successful an individual should take an active role in continuing their education, especially in the field of veterinary technology.
Requirements include, but are not limited to:
• Attending technician staff meetings
• Attending service meetings
• Attending hospital wide meetings or at least reviewing associated meeting minutes
• Attending or completing in-service training sessions when directed
• Obtaining CE credit requirements as associated with the various facility accreditations (AAHA, VECCS, AAFP):
o 10 CE credits on a calendar year basis
• Obtaining CE credit requirements as associated with the state licensure association/organization and VTS academy
• Upholding yearly compliance requirements by completing various policy reviews, in-person training sessions, and computer-based training modules on a yearly or biennial basis
• Must present one 15-minutePatient Safety and Quality Rounds report, preapproved by direct supervisor to hospital staff once a year.
• Must present at least 1- 30 minute lecture on an ECC topic, preapproved by a direct supervisor to the ECC staff once yearly.

Expected Salary:

Salary is $24 - $30 per hour, based on ECC experience

Minimum Requirements:

Credentialed veterinary technician and VTS specialty certified in specific area.
