Job Description:

The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist – General Surgery (Fellow) vacancy.

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania, and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania Medical School. The Hospital provides most specialist medical services for the region or state.

This role has been established to improve the delivery of General Surgical services to patients and assist in the co-ordination and training of surgical Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) and Registrars. It is ideally suited to a surgeon that has recently been awarded a Fellowship in General Surgery (or will be prior to the commencement of employment).

Much of the clinical work in this role involves managing acute / emergency cases as part of the Department of General Surgery’s Emergency Surgical Unit (ESU). There is also involvement in outpatient and elective services. The RHH Department of General Surgery offers the major sub-specialty areas (colorectal, UGI, HPB, breast, endocrine) and there would be opportunities for exposure to those fields of interest to the successful candidate. There may also be the opportunity to be involved with other teaching and research activities.


A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicants dependent on clinical experience and seniority.


Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.

Period of Employment

Fixed term full-time day work (with on-call), working 76 hours per fortnight commencing 1 February 2022 until 31 January 2023.


General Surgery, Royal Hobart Hospital


In the role Staff Specialist – General Surgery you will:

  • Provide quality specialist and sub-specialty services in General Surgery.
  • Provide inpatient and outpatient care to public and private patients of the Royal Hobart Hospital in General Surgery.
  • Be involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Be actively involved in research.
  • Undertake quality improvement activities

Essential Requirements

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty.

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer.

The following checks are to be conducted:

c) Serious Drug Offences
d) Crimes involving dishonesty

3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check
