Job Description:

Classification Title:Engineer I

The Department of Physics is seeking an Engineer I. This position is responsible for all phases of the design, development, and manufacture of a wide variety of custom electronic equipment comprised of precision analog circuit design, radio frequency (RF) circuit design, small-signal processing, analog-to-digital conversion, digital to analog conversion, computer interfaces, embedded microprocessors, and electromechanical devices. Duites and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Design responsibilities include initial hardware circuit design and prototyping, and the design, writing, and testing of software for embedded microprocessors using various programming languages, including assembler, C, and C++. Manufacturing tasks include creating printed circuit board layout, assembling printed circuits (and associated hardware) and mechanical assembly. Documentation tasks include computer-aided schematic capture, detailed technical design documentation, detailed software documentation, and operating instructions.

Repair, calibrate, and modify a wide range of complex state-of-the-art analog, digital, and microprocessor based electronic devices, including commercially manufactured test and measurement instrumentation and devices built in-house, which includes small-signal processing, analog-to-digital conversion, digital-to-analog conversion, computer interfaces, embedded microprocessors, and electromechanical devices.

Design, write, test, integrate, document, and maintain software for personal computers and servers to implement databases, Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) and representational State Transfer (REST) web services, interactive web applications and stand-alone applications for Windows and Linux platforms using various programming languages including assembler, C/C++, Java, JavaScript, Personal Home Page (PHP), Python, and database managers including My Structured Query Language (MySQL).

Collaborate with, and provide technical assistance to, faculty members, staff members, and graduate students during construction of one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art electronic equipment for the control and measurement of experimental parameters.

Responsible for general shop operation, including maintenance of parts and materials. Oversee student assistants during project construction, equipment repair, and general shop maintenance.

Expected Salary:

The salary range is $50,000-$58,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelors degree in an appropriate area; or a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of relevant experience.
