Job Description:

The Sexual Health Services Tasmania is a state-wide service with clinics in Hobart, Launceston, and an outreach clinic in Devonport. The service is staffed by doctors, nurses a psychologist and administrative officers. The Sexual Health Services provide people with the opportunity to enhance their sexual health and well-being.

Sexual Health Services is part of the Tasmanian Health Service teaching hospital for students and for training clinicians. At times, the service has the opportunity to teach the specialist area of sexual health to others.

At each of our clinics, clinical services primarily involve the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of sexually transmissible infections (STIs), sexual functioning, conditions impacting upon sexuality and gender diversity.

The clinical services delivered by our service are achieved by providing sexual health checks, STI diagnosis and treatment, as well as the care and management of HIV and treatment and cure of Hepatitis C. PrEP – pre exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention is also available.

We provide a multidisciplinary transgender service including information, support and medical assistance and guidance

Our service also provides assessment and treatment of various genital dermatology conditions, as well as treatment and management of discomfort and pain.


A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.


Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.

Staff Specialist – Sexual Health Service will:

  • Provide specialist clinical services of the highest possible standard to patients attending the Sexual Health Service.
  • Be involved in research and quality improvement activities, undergraduate and post graduate teaching at the Royal Hobart Hospital relevant to sexual health.
  • Deliver outpatient services in sexual health across the state-wide service.
  • Participate in undergraduate and post graduate educational activities.

Essential Requirements

Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer of any new criminal convictions and/or if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer.

The following checks are to be conducted:

1. Conviction checks in the following areas:

a) Crimes of Violence
b) Sex Related Offences
c) Serious Drug Offences
d) Crimes involving dishonesty
2. Identification check
3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check

Desirable Requirements

  • Current Driver’s Licence.
  • Holds a qualification recognised as a specialist medical qualification in accordance with the provisions of the Commonwealth/State Agreement on Mutual Recognition which is relevant to his/her appointment.
  • Additional skills in the areas of Sexual Assault, Public Health, Men’s or Women’s Health would be desirable.
  • Experience as a Sexual Health Physician.
