Job Description:

UF Information Technology (UFIT) is currently seeking an IT Infrastructure Technician to join Infrastructure Communication Technology (ICT), a unit within UFIT.

Employment with UFIT provides an excellent opportunity to work with other employees dedicated and focused on understanding and interpreting the technological needs of the University of Florida’s innovative and inspirational community.

As part of ICT, you will support and maintain moderately complex network systems. As part of the Data Center and Logistics team, you will troubleshoot, assist with the moves, add, and changes in the data center environment. Experience in troubleshooting network connection issues is key for the ability to support our networking infrastructure across campus.

Some key responsibilities and characteristics of this position are:

  • Follow best practices for data center updates, including rack layout design and implementation.
  • Configure networking equipment, including switches and hubs, as specified in the network design guide.
  • Serve as technical resource for customers and peers when troubleshooting network connection issues.

Expected Salary:

$44,700 annually

Minimum Requirements:

An associate's degree and two years of appropriate experience or a high school diploma and four years of appropriate experience.

Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience but does not negate the minimum degree requirement(s).

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:

  • CCNA (or equivalent) certification
  • Knowledge of UF online documentation, Visio and Confluence
  • Understanding of Physical Networking principles and their application
  • Physical network infrastructure and components

Experience with the following is helpful:

  • Material receipts and SnipeIT inventory helpful
  • Equipment moves, adds, and changes in a data center environment
  • Data center rack layout design and implementation
  • Installing, terminating and certifying Cat5E, Cat6, and Cat6A
  • Installing, terminating and certifying fiber optic cabling
  • Working with a standardized naming convention and documentation system
  • Troubleshooting network connection issues

Basic knowledge of:

  • Network cabling best practices
  • IEEE Ethernet standards
  • Familiarity with the OSI model

Ability to:

  • Lift and carry up to 50lbs
  • Use hand and power tools
  • Basic understanding of subnets and VLANs

To be successful in this position, the incumbent must be:

  • A self-starter with strong initiative
  • A technically-minded problem solver with a background in cabling and/or networking
  • Proficient in technical writing and typing
  • Willing and able to complete the internal dept. technician training on all facets of physical infrastructure, and pass test and practical on said material
  • Able to interact with people in an effective and courteous manner
