Job Description:

The Opportunity

The Structural Biology Facility (SBF) is at the forefront of structural biology research, offering exciting opportunities for computing systems officers. Researchers here work with cutting-edge methods, including Deep Learning techniques such as protein structure modelling using tools like Alphafold and protein engineering with RFDiffusion. The facility provides access to excellent modern GPUs, enabling scientists to tackle diverse and challenging problems in the field. Our computing support staff get to learn and support users in this rapidly developing space.

Reporting to the Computational Research Scientist, you will assist SBF staff in implementing and improving their biomolecular computational infrastructure and workflows including configuring computer systems for reliable operation, managing GPU hardware, installing impactful scientific code (including Deep Learning style packages), and enabling researchers to achieve project goals using SBF capabilities.

The Organisation

The Structural Biology Facility provides services and training to UNSW researchers in structural biology methods including supporting a number of biophysical methods, macro-molecular X-ray crystallography, single particle cryo electron micrscopy data processing and an increasing range of computational modelling methods. The Facility manages and operates state-of-the-art equipment including a crystallisation suite, an X-ray diffractometer and a number of computational resources (GPU heavy) for Deep Learning and Cryo EM data processing.

UNSW isn’t like other places you’ve worked. Yes, we’re a large organisation with a diverse and talented community; a community doing extraordinary things. But what makes us different isn’t only what we do, it’s how we do it. Together, we are driven to be thoughtful, practical, and purposeful in all we do. Taking this combined approach is what makes our work matter. It’s the reason we’re Australia’s number one university for impact and among the nation’s Top 20 employers.

Who you are

You have a degree in computer science, information systems, science, or related field and or experience in working with computer systems in research settings such as universities or scientific organisations, as well as: -
