The School of Psychology at UNSW is the leading Psychology school in Australia. It is located in the Faculty of Science and is recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in research and teaching. The Research Assistant will play a key role supporting on ARC funded projects in the laboratory of Dr Philip Jean-Richard Dit Bressel located in the School of Psychology at the University of New South Wales. The position will be responsible for assisting in data processing, stereotaxic surgery and post-operative care of animals, behavioural testing and fibre photometry.
About the role
- $82k - $93k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
- Fixed Term – 11 months
- Full time (35 hours)
The role reports to Philip Jean-Richard Dit Bressel and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
- Assist with stereotaxic surgery and post-operative care of animals.
- Assist with behavioural testing and fibre photometry.
- Assist with Histology, immunohistochemistry, microscopy.
- Support in data analysis and preparation of technical and research reports
- Maintenance of appropriate laboratory records and assist in the day to day running of the laboratory.

- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others
About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Completion of a degree in Psychology, Neuroscience or related discipline, ideally with Honours.
- Demonstrated experience in rodent handling and behavioural testing.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal communication skills to initiate and maintain effective stakeholder relationships.
- Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
