Job Description:

The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from suitably qualified FACEM applicants, with experience in leadership and management of large, complex healthcare or other relevant organisations for the role of Director – Emergency Medicine at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital in Tasmania and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine. The hospital provides all general and specialty medical and surgical services as well as paediatrics, obstetrics, and psychiatry. It is also the state’s tertiary trauma centre.

The Emergency Department has direct access to all medical and surgical specialities and has approximately 75,000 presentations per year. The Department has more than 250 staff, consisting of medical, nursing, allied health, clerical, aides, and orderlies.

The Emergency Department is staffed by specialists, registrars, nurses, and clinical support staff who work together as a dynamic team with strong focus on collegiality.

Salary

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Classification

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1-11 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.

Period of Employment

Permanent, full-time day work (with on-call), working 76 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible.

The Role

Provide overall direction for the Emergency Department (ED) with responsibility for providing effective clinical, financial, teaching and research services. The leadership team supporting the Director - ED includes an Associate Director and Deputy Directors.

Provide a high level of strategic leadership and direction, ensuring resources are efficiently utilised, services are effectively integrated within the hospital/service and the highest standards of service delivery are achieved in accordance with hospital/service policy directions, service standards and financial targets.

Provide the Critical Care, Clinical Support and Investigations (CCCS&I) Clinical and Nursing Directors with high quality and authoritative advice and support related to emergency care service delivery and planning.

Provide specialist medical care to patients attending the hospital/service.

Duties

  • Provide clinical leadership, incorporating principles of best practice to ensure the provision of highest standard of care for ED patients and meet the agreed goals and targets.
  • Identify key factors influencing the current demand and throughput for ED and contribute to planning for future level of demand.
  • Liaise and consult with colleagues across the Department of Health (DoH) to ensure the ED provides the highest standard of clinical care in cooperation with other clinical specialties. Support integrated care for those at risk of high acute service utilisation and safeguard against unplanned re-admissions or avoidable ED presentations.
  • Represent the ED within the relevant management forums of the DoH.
  • Ensures the development, implementation and maintenance of performance management systems which support the ongoing development of individual and team performance and skills for medical, technical and administrative staff.
  • Ensures a system of continuous quality improvement that systematically evaluates and identifies opportunities for improvement and plans to implement strategies to meet patient needs and national and organisational KPIs.
  • Promotes an awareness of and engagement in a culture of patient safety and an obligation to report patient safety concerns.
  • Manage the human, material and financial resources for medical, technical and administrative staff of the ED.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to the organisation’s Quality & Safety and Work Health & Safety processes, including in the development and implementation of safety systems, improvement initiatives, safeguarding practices for vulnerable people, and related training.
  • The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, that are within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level.

Essential Requirements

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty
