About the Role
The Department is seeking to appoint a Clinical Research Officer for an exciting research project that will be conducted on Elcho Island, Northeast Arnhem Land, NT in 2024-25.

Working closely with local health services and programs, the project seeks to codesign and implement an outreach service that combines traditional values and knowledge with modern approaches to health with the overall aim of reducing risk factors for diabetes and chronic disease in the community. The Clinical Research Officer will be responsible for supporting Yolngu staff in the delivery and evaluation of the service.

The position will be based in Galiwin’ku, Elcho Island, and will work closely with Miwatj staff based on Elcho Island, and in Nhulunbuy.

Who We Are Looking For
To be successful in this role you will have a demonstrated ability to work successfully in a cross-cultural setting including supervising and training local staff. You will be a critical thinker and can provide support for the development and implementation of translational research in a field setting. You will be a keen problem-solver who can work independently as well as in teams to utilise conceptual and innovative problem-solving skills for managing conflicting priorities. You must be able to reside at the trial site for most of the project from Feb 2024.

Your New Team – The Department of Infectious Diseases
The Department of Infectious Diseases is a recently established department of the Melbourne Medical School, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences that is based at The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute). Research within the department encompasses infectious diseases and public health including antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infections, malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, influenza, viral hepatitis, emerging pathogens, and Indigenous Health. Our researchers come from diverse backgrounds, including discovery research and basic scientists, clinician researchers, epidemiologists, public health physicians and microbiologists. We have a strong interest in improving health in remote Indigenous communities and in disadvantaged communities, globally.
