Job Description:

The Tasmanian Health Service is expanding to meet the needs of our community and the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is seeking Senior Resident Medical Officer(s) (SRMO) to join our growing team in the Emergency Department.
Based on the scenic waterfront area of Hobart, the RHH is our tertiary referral hospital for the state and our Emergency Department is a Stage 4 accredited site for both adult and paediatric emergency medicine, offering 36 months of training with ACEM or two years of advanced training under the pre-2022 program.
Life’s not just about work - it's also about lifestyle. In Tasmania, you will be encouraged to be your authentic self, share your wisdom with emerging medical doctors, and find your purpose. Our remoteness fosters a culture of invention and human connection, creating a sense of community and adventure.
Tasmania offers breathtaking coastlines, National Parks, award-winning restaurants, and bars. You can surf in the early mornings, go fly fishing on weekends, take photography classes, write novels, or sell preserves at the farmers' markets. You can also take part in the community, volunteer, and serve on boards. Plus, with shorter commutes, you can enjoy outdoor activities like mountain biking or hiking after work while offering your family the opportunity to thrive in a safer, more adventurous place.

The Role of Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) – Emergency Department
This is a new role in the department to help support and develop our senior Residents transition towards becoming a Registrar.
As one of our Senior Resident Medical Officers (SRMO) you’ll provide emergency care to patients attending the Emergency Department (ED) at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).
You will be encouraged to learn, grow and develop as a confident junior doctor, demonstrating the skills & knowledge gained whilst working throughout the year working as SRMO within ED. The experience and skills gained will work towards career pathways in emergency medicine, critical care specialities or General Practice - your practical and academic experiences at the Royal Hobart Hospital will empower your future.
If you choose to continue a career in Emergency Medicine, this time fulfills the ED placement criteria to apply to ACEM and we support our doctors wishing to apply to the college.
Your roster will align with the Registrar roster with day / evening / night shifts across all areas of the department including resus. SRMOs have access to the same teaching program as Registrars.
The education program is highly valued within the department and runs as a full day each fortnight. SRMOs are specifically rostered to these days to avoid clinical demands interfering with their attendance. In addition to the whole-cohort education program, there are separate additional dedicated education for those wishing to undertake the Emergency Medicine Certificate or Diploma.
Rostering is flexible to help maintain a work-life balance. We are very understanding of the importance of time outside of work and can accommodate part-time needs.
You will be joining a department dedicated to the wellbeing of its staff, exemplified by winning the ACEM Wellbeing Award in 2022 for our numerous wellbeing strategies embedded in our daily work practices.
In the position of SRMO, you will have increased independence over a regular RMO position but will not be expected to take on a supervisory role. There is in-person FACEM coverage from 07:00-00:30 7 days a week with a consultant on call overnight. During night shifts, Registrars oversee departmental areas and supervisory responsibilities rather than SRMOs.
RHH Emergency Department, this is an excellent opportunity for you to join our expanding team of specialists, doctors in training, nurses and allied health professionals and clinical support staff.
