Classification Title:

ASO DEAN & PROFESSOR / INSTRUCTIONAL PROFESSOR

Job Description:

The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering (HWCOE) is conducting an internal search for a new Associate Dean for Student Affairs (ADSA) to serve as part of the College’s Executive Team. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean of the College and is responsible for all undergraduate and certain graduate student services in the College, as well as supervising staff responsible for pre-college and transition programs, academic advising, student success, and experiential learning programs. The Office of the ADSA manages an annual budget of ~$2M+ operating and $2.1M foundation and scholarships, with 16 current full-time staff having extended management responsibility for large groups of faculty and staff in delivering college events.

This is a UF Internal Search. Applicants must possess the minimum qualifications to be considered for the position. Instructional (master lecturers) or tenured full professors are eligible for consideration. A PhD in engineering or a closely related field is also a requirement. Additional skills required include outstanding communication and organization, student engagement, staff management, constituent consultation with a focus on the boards that advise departments and the College, and crisis response and management.

The scope of operations for the Office of the Associate Dean for Student Affairs (ADSA) has substantially expanded over the past decade as student enrollment has grown and the College has sought to enrich the student experience. At present, the primary areas of responsibility for the position include pre-college and transition programs, academic advising, student success programs and experiential learning programs. The ADSA’s office is currently undergoing a reorganization according to these functions with existing or new director appointments for the Pre-college & Transition programs along with Academic Advising, and a new assistant dean appointment for oversight of Student Success and Experiential Learning programs.

Focusing on Pre-College & Transitions Programs, the ADSA works with staff to develop, implement, support, and assess:

  • all K-12 outreach initiatives throughout the College;
  • the long-standing Successful Transition and Enhanced Preparation for Undergraduates (STEPUP) Program;
  • the Freshman Leadership Engineering Program; and
  • the first-year engineering program course, “Intro to Engineering”.

Focusing on Academic Advising, the ADSA works with staff to develop, implement, support, and assess:

  • advising programs for first year students;
  • the Engineering Undergraduate Advising Council (including meetings with advisors and with faculty program coordinators);
  • engineering orientation programs, including Preview, new student convocation and new student welcome;
  • the college petition process;
  • transfer student admissions;
  • retention programs for general engineering students, first-year students, transfer students, and underrepresented students; and
  • the HWCOE Center of Student Excellence and delivery of student excellence workshops.

Focusing on Student Success Programs, the ADSA will work with the new assistant dean and staff to develop, implement, support, and assess:

  • HWCOE tours and recruitment information sessions;
  • transfer partnership programs, including Gator Engineering (GE)@Sante Fe, GE@State College of FL, New College of FL, U. of Virgin Islands, and U. West Indies;
  • Student recognition programs, including the HWCOE Undergraduate Scholarship Program, and the GE Attribute Awards Program;
  • college student health and wellness activities; and
  • HWCOE tutoring services.

Focusing on Experiential Learning Programs, the ADSA will work with the new assistant dean and staff to develop, implement, support, and assess:

  • access and activity in study abroad and international partnerships, including Global E3 IIE and others;
  • access to career services, including student internships and co-ops;
  • administration and professional development of college-level student organization and design teams, including the Engineering Ambassadors;
  • access to undergraduate research programs, including the Emerging Scholars Program and others; and
  • Research Experiences for Undergraduates with communication on prospects to the Director or Graduate Recruiting.

In general, each of these functional areas requires effective interfacing across a population of 12000+ students (in total), including guiding college-level student organizations, listening to and resolving student grievances, supporting student wellness and partnering with the UF Promise Program and the Gators Experience Program, recognizing student achievements through administration of scholarship and honors and awards programs, developing and facilitating mentoring programs for undergraduates, and planning and leading college award events and graduation events/commencement exercises. As noted, the ADSA is now responsible for coordinating and administering K-12 outreach programs throughout the HWCOE. Finally, the Office of the ADSA conducts substantial data analytics on student outcomes and reports to the University level administration (including admissions, enrollment, retention, graduation rates, experiential learning opportunities, career placements and more). This Office will also eventually coordinate post-secondary education accreditation (e.g., ABET, SACSOC). The ADSA serves on several standing committees in the College, including the HWCOE Executive Committee, the College’s Administrative Council, the Dean’s Advisory Board (DAB) Education Committee and the College Curriculum Committee. Related to graduate student services, the ADSA serves as the College’s point of contact with the Dean of Students Office.

At the University level, the ADSA serves as the College’s representative on the UF Grievance Committee, University Curriculum Committee and the UF Advisory Council for Undergraduate Affairs and partners with the Provost’s office in requesting posthumous and in memoriam degrees. The ADSA will also partner closely with the UF Student Success program (https://studentsuccess.ufl.edu) in the future.
