Job Description:
State-wide Mental Health Services is a leader and innovator for a unique corner of the health care industry. We provide a comprehensive suite of services across the areas of mental health, alcohol and drugs, forensic mental health and correctional primary health.
The Statewide Mental Health Service reforms are also providing expanding opportunities in services such as Acute Care, First Responder and Hospital in the Home Teams. In partnership with the University of Tasmania the Service has also recently established the Tasmanian Centre for Mental Health Service Innovation which is dedicated to helping enhance and improve mental health service offerings for children, young people, and adults across Tasmania. The Centre is being co-directed by Professor David Castle and Professor Brett McDermott and its activities will focus on workforce development, training and education, research and development, and policy and advocacy
The Role:
- Work within a multidisciplinary health team to facilitate the comprehensive assessment, planning and implementation of appropriate clinical management for persons who are dependent on or who have problems related to the use of alcohol and or other drugs.
- Assess and prepare treatment plans, provide treatment and review and monitor progress of patients admitted to the inpatient withdrawal unit, patients managed through community based services and patients treated through the public Opioid Pharmacotherapy Program, in accordance with ADS policies and clinical protocols. This may include occasional travel to Launceston and Ulverstone to provide medical services to patients of ADS living in the North and North West and Consultation Liaison to the Royal Hobart Hospital.
- Provide operational information and reports to the Manager ADS South and the Speciality Director.
- Contribute to the development of policies and procedures for clinical services including the ADS inpatient withdrawal unit, detox@home and Opioid Pharmacotherapy Program.
- Provide specialist medical advice to private prescribers in relation to the safe and appropriate clinical management of complex pharmacotherapy clients.
- Supervision of trainees and medical students

Position Features:
- Employment is conditional upon the recommendation of the Credentials and Clinical Privileges Committee that the applicant is able to fully and adequately fulfil the responsibilities of the position.
- Staff employed against this Statement of Duties as a Visiting Medical Practitioner will be employed in accordance with the Tasmanian Visiting Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Agreement and remunerated accordingly.
- On Call Roster and call back work is a requirement of this role.

Details of Appointment
Permanent full time, day worker (with on-call) working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing from as soon as possible.

Salary:
Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1- Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 $163,005 - $247,768 per annum, pro rata + 11% superannuation + access to salary packaging
Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $234,726 -$247,768 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award
- Salary range is in accordance with Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019
*A new wages agreement has been agreed and is currently being registered in the Tasmanian Industrial Commission. The new rates apply to this position and are effective from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2023.
In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:
- Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle or motor vehicle allowance of $25,758 per annum, pro rata
- Communication allowance of $1,948 per annum, pro rata
- Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $24,927 per annum, pro rata
- Relocation and commencement support available up to $15,000 for approved appointees
- other allowances as applicable
Eligibility:
Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria:
- Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty
The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
