A RESEARCH TECHNICIAN POSITION in neuroscience and microbiology is available in the laboratories of Profs. James Strother and Sandra Loesgen at the University of Florida’s Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience, located in St. Augustine Florida.
The technician will be part of an ongoing collaboration at the Whitney Lab that aims to develop novel pharmaceutical leads by identifying microbial metabolites with activity in zebrafish-based assays. This individual will contribute to multiple aspects of the collaboration, including microbial natural products chemistry and zebrafish neuroscience.
Responsibilities will include contributing to zebrafish husbandry and preparation of in vivo assays (Strother Lab ); and also bacterial and fungal strain maintenance, cultivation, as well as extraction and sample processing (Loesgen Lab). Detailed training in all processes and procedures will be provided. A BS or MS in chemistry or biology or related disciplines with some laboratory experience is required. Additional experience in microbiology or animal husbandry is a plus.
The position is temporary with funds available for 12 months, and compensation starting at $17/hr ($32,640 annually). Full time (40h week) employment is preferred, but part time may be an option. The work schedule is flexible and will be determined based on the candidate’s preferences and animal husbandry needs.
