Job Description:

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the State’s tertiary referral centre and is also the primary teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine. The position is permanent, and the successful candidate will become an important influence in the culture and systems within the department.


A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.


Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.

  • A new wages agreement has been agreed and is currently being registered in the Tasmanian Industrial Commission. The new rates apply to this position and are effective from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2023.

Period of Employment

Permanent full-time day work (with on-call) working up to 76 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible.

  • Patient Care:
  1. Medical care of patients.
  2. Undertake procedures as required in the area of practice.
  3. Participate in after hours on call roster.
  • Teaching:
  1. Undertake undergraduate clinical teaching.
  2. Provide supervision and training of post graduate trainees.
  3. Research:
  4. Maintain involvement in research activities.
  • Administrative and Quality Improvement:
  1. Provide administrative and quality improvement functions for units as required
  2. Work closely with corresponding nursing staff and support staff in the area of practice.

Essential Requirements

  • Be registered or be eligible for registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as Specialist Cardiothoracic Surgeon
  • Hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons with a recognised speciality field of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery
  • Be available for weekend and after-hours work
  • Experience in both Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery
  • Hold a current driver’s license.
  • Current Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements)


  • Strong clinical skills in minimally invasive Thoracic and Cardiac surgery

  • We will also expect senior specialist to have demonstrated advanced clinical experience outlined in a CV that clearly and comprehensively outlines the applicant’s professional history.

  • Be able to demonstrate their ability to undertake duties and responsibilities deemed by THS as those expected of a Senior Specialists.

  • Have demonstrated their advanced ability to provide leadership to their colleagues through either clinical or administrative means.

It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
a) Crimes of Violence
b) Sex Related Offences
c) Serious Drug Offences
d) Crimes involving dishonesty

2. Identification check
3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check

4. Prior to commencement successful candidates will also be required to

be granted their Scope of Clinical Practice through the THS Statewide Credentialling Committee
