Job Description:

The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from qualified applicants to appoint to the Registrar vacancies, within the Trauma Service, Royal Hobart Hospital.

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the state referral centre for trauma in Tasmania. We have a diverse and inclusive team, welcoming trauma practitioners from a variety of clinical backgrounds. The Trauma Service admits all major trauma under a single bed card and is responsible for the multidisciplinary management of injured patients. The trauma service adopts a model of care that ensures timely, efficient and effective care for all patients with significant injuries.

The RHH is Tasmania’s major trauma centre and is designated as a Level 6 facility in the Tasmanian Role Delineation Framework. This means that RHH is required to provide the full spectrum of care for injured patients, spanning multiple specialties across all phases of care, including pre-hospital, emergency, intensive care, surgery, medicine, and rehabilitation. As a Level 6 facility, RHH sees between 250 - 300 major traumas per year.

The Trauma Service is a consultant led unit. Trauma staff specialists supervise a team comprising senior registrars, registrars and resident medical officers from a variety of professional backgrounds. Medical staff at all levels will benefit from the opportunity to work closely with the Clinical Nurse Consultant and experienced Trauma Case Managers, who champion a holistic approach to care and continuity throughout each patient’s injury journey. Trauma staff specialists provide expert medical advice to other inpatient teams and will represent the trauma service at multidisciplinary meetings for complex patients.

The Trauma Service provides two hours of protected teaching time for medical staff. Additional quality improvement, educational, research and administrative activities can be negotiated.

Salary

$97,946 to $138,593 per annum pro rata + 10.5% superannuation + access to salary packaging

  • Salary range is in accordance with Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019
  • *Please note that Salaried Medical Practitioners Agreement is currently under negotiation

Period of Employment

Fixed term, full time & part time day work, 80 hours per fortnight commencing 5 February 2024 – 3 February 2025 (Please note 24 months negotiable)

Duties

The Registrar is responsible for the day to day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the Hospital and provides after-hours emergency cover at the hospital as determined by the Medical Staffing Unit. They are also responsible for attending any trauma callouts in the Emergency Department and responding to referrals and consults.

Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.

  • General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements).

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
