Job Description:

ED Staff Specialist – Royal Hobart Hospital

The Tasmanian Health Service is expanding to meet the needs of our people and communities. At the Royal Hobart Hospital, we are the tertiary referral hospital for the state, an exciting and rewarding place to work where your energy and positive values will contribute to sustained change as we grow.

To be Tasmanian is to value quality over quantity. We create, preserve and protect the unusual. With quiet confidence, with passion and perseverance, we pursue the extraordinary. Could you be Tasmanian?

You’ve worked hard to become a Fellow of Emergency Medicine. Your leadership path could take you anywhere. What’s different about Tasmania is our culture and lifestyle. Here, you will be encouraged to be your authentic self, to share your wisdom with our emerging generation of medical doctors, and in doing so, find your purpose.

Our remoteness helps drive a culture of invention and human connection, which feels both old-fashioned and… like the only future worth pursuing. Here in Tasmania, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to breathtaking coastlines, National Parks or award-winning restaurants or bars.

Some people surf in the early mornings and go fly fishing on weekends or take photography classes, write novels, sell preserves at the weekly farmers’ markets, learn to mountain bike. They take part in the community, volunteering and serving on boards. And their spouses and children have similar opportunities to thrive in a quieter, safer, more adventurous place.

After a hard day at work, you can get on your bike or put on your boots and “tell it to the mountain” in minutes, not hours.

Something is happening here, and you’re invited to be part of it.

It’s not where you were born. It’s who you are, and who you want to be. Be Tasmanian.

Tasmanian | The quiet pursuit of the extraordinary

Make It Tasmania | Move for a great lifestyle

The Role of the Staff Specialist

Based in the scenic waterfront area of Hobart, Tasmania, as one of our Staff Specialist you’ll provide emergency care to patients attending the Emergency Department (ED) at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).

You will be encouraged to be yourself, to learn, to grow and to develop meaning in your work. As a Staff Specialist, you may choose to be involved in research and quality improvement activities, undergraduate teaching of students from University of Tasmania’s Medical, Nursing and Paramedic schools and postgraduate teaching for our interns, registrars, and residents. The RHH is a Training Stage 4 accredited site (accredited in 2022) for both adult and paediatric emergency medicine.

At the RHH we are fortunate to have strong links with other specialised areas which offer great flexibility for ED specialists who wish to work across multiple disciplines. Some of these areas include:

Extreme Environment medicine (with Tasmanian being the home of the Australian Antarctic Program and the gateway to Eastern Antarctica).

We want an enthusiastic candidate who wants to make an impact on the future of your profession. You’re also inspired by what is offered as a leader in our Emergency Department.

About the Royal Hobart Hospital

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital in Tasmania and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine. The hospital provides all general and specialty medical and surgical services as well as paediatrics, obstetrics and psychiatry. It is also the state’s tertiary trauma centre.

The Emergency Department (ED) provides a tertiary level service for people with illness or injury 24 hours a day 7 days per week. Our busy ED provides care for >75,000 patients annually with an admission rate of more than 35% and a paediatric case load of 20%.

The RHH Emergency Department has a co-located Emergency Medical Unit (EMU) which is a short stay ward for patients requiring a brief hospital stay (generally less than 24 hours).  The EMU has 28 short-stay beds operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with a high turnover ward environment and a variety of clinical presentations.

The health demographics of the Tasmanian population means you’ll get to work with a greatly differing population, often more unwell, with more advanced pathology. We have a specialised and highly dedicated allied health team based in the ED to ensure alternated pathways to hospital admission are fully utilised.

The RHH ED is a fast-paced and energetic environment and there are opportunities for staff to be involved in a variety of projects, clinical and research opportunities.

With the RHH Emergency Department (ED) significantly outgrowing its current capacity and facilities, works on the ED expansion commenced in March 2022. This is the first stage of work to expand and modernise the ED, ensuring that we have the number of beds and treatment points needed to meet future emergency service demand through to 2035. This major redevelopment is creating a state-of-the-art emergency department slated for completion in 2026.
