Surface Water Engineer / Hydrologist
Work Location: Perth based with Site Travel as required Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.
Roster: 5:2 - Monday to Friday, with ad hoc site travel.
Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (FMG) is currently operating four mine sites, a port facility and is expanding rapidly into a series of development projects across Australia and overseas. In addition, the company has set impressive targets to decarbonise its operations by 2030 and become a world leader in green steel production.
The Water Engineering Team within FMG plays an important role in addressing the surface water management and water engineering challenges of these projects and operations. This team is expanding, and an exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented and enthusiastic Surface Water Engineer / Hydrologist to come on board.
This position offers the successful candidate a unique opportunity to develop professionally across various aspects of the resource sector. The role will be Perth based but include opportunities for site work.
As well as good technical ability, the position requires excellent inter-personal skills and the successful candidate must be adaptable, self-motivated and driven to develop their skills as a surface water engineer / hydrologist.
Key Accountabilities include:
- Provide surface water inputs to multidisciplinary stakeholders to achieve key objectives across various stages of project development including prefeasibility study, feasibility study, detail design and construction
- Undertake technical analysis to support the investigation, approval and development of new mining projects. This includes hydrology and waterways hydraulic modelling for flood impact assessment, flood risk review for bulk earthworks and mine infrastructure development
- Represent surface water to raise awareness of flood risk and surface water management to all stakeholders
- Engage and manage consultants for surface water investigations (including the review of consultant’s reports and recommendations), as required
- Attend site when required to execute surface water investigations and monitoring programs
- Maintain a collaborative relationship with all aspects of water engineering management and contribute to knowledge building and awareness.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or other relevant discipline (2+ years relevant experience) with an understanding of catchment hydrology, river hydraulics, flood modelling and use of modelling and supporting spatial GIS tools/software
- Civil drainage design understanding and experience in Civil Design software would be advantageous
- Sound report writing skills including experience using Microsoft Office (or equivalent)
- Effective communication and time management skills
- Self-driven and outcome focused with Strong team and interpersonal skills
- Willingness to attend site for short periods when required
