Job Description:

The Department of Health is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Visiting Medical Practitioner (Sexual Assault Medical Service) vacancy.

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the State’s tertiary referral centre and is also the primary teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine.

Salary

VMP L1-L2 (RUR) $149.21 to $168.45 per hour:

  • inclusive of paid recreation leave, sick leave, conference leave and sabbatical leave entitlements and subject to any increases in remuneration in accordance with the Tasmanian Visiting Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement
  • The hourly rate is commensurate to years of service.

Period of Employment

Fixed term casual day work (with on-call), working as and when required commencing asap for 12 months.

Duties

  1. Participate in a 24/7 roster to provide forensic and physical examinations for alleged victims of sexual assault aged 17 years and over, ensuring that the collection and documentation of evidence is in accordance with policies and evidentiary requirements.
  2. Provide treatment of certain minor injuries sustained by clients in the course of a sexual assault. Includes referral to the Department of Emergency Medicine for the treatment of injuries or medical conditions.
  3. Information and provision of emergency contraception and prophylaxis for sexually transmissible infections.
  4. Collect forensic specimens and document findings from examinations, and attend court as required and provide opinions regarding the findings from the forensic examination.
  5. Participate in ongoing training, update and case review sessions as scheduled by the Clinical Nurse Consultant.

Essential Requirements

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
a) Crimes of Violence
b) Sex Related Offences
c) Serious Drug Offences
d) Crimes involving dishonesty

2. Identification check
3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check

Desirable Requirements

  • Holds or is working towards a post-graduate qualification in the area of sexual assault forensic and medical examination
