The Role:

Based at the Launceston General Hospital (LGH), vacancies for anaesthetists have been created to meet the Tasmanian Health Service (THS) commitment to substantial increases in elective surgery and endoscopy. The THS is an innovative and dynamic organisation dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of our community. We are committed to providing the highest levels of healthcare and services. The Launceston General Hospital is a major teaching hub for the University of Tasmania's (UTAS) Clinical School.

The team you will be joining is a friendly and motivated group who exhibit a strong culture of collegiality. You can expect to enjoy a high degree of cooperation and cohesion both within the Department of Anaesthesia and more broadly across the hospital's various medical and surgical specialities. Working alongside our dynamic group of dedicated, enthusiastic surgeons and proceduralists presents a wonderful opportunity to provide a broad range of quality specialist anaesthetic services to patients at the LGH. Various teaching opportunities also exist through trainee support, simulation, and potential involvement with UTAS. Also, a new co-located private hospital is being planned, creating the opportunity for the inclusion of some private practice into the successful applicant's work balance mix.

Details of Appointment

Permanent, full time, day work, position working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.

*notwithstanding hours and commencement date may be negotiated with the successful applicant


Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1- Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 $163,005 - $247,768 per annum

Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $234,726 -$247,768 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:


Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria:

  1. Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty

*Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:

  1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
    1. crimes of violence
    2. sex related offences
    3. serious drug offences
    4. crimes involving dishonesty

  3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check.
