Job Description:

The Department of Health is seeking interest from a suitably qualified applicant for a Staff Specialist (Geriatric Medicine) vacancy.

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the State’s tertiary referral centre and is also the primary teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine.

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.


Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.

Period of Employment

Fixed term day work (with on-call), working up to 76 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible until 1 April 2024

Primary Purpose

In accordance with hospital policy, procedures and statutory regulations the Staff Specialist will:

  1. Provide inpatient and community-based services and work within the Aged Care Team as directed by the Head of Geriatric Medicine.
  2. Provide clinical services of the highest possible standard to Geriatric Medicine patients.
  3. Actively pursue improved outcomes for Geriatric Medicine patients by participating in teaching and research relevant to Geriatric Medicine.


1. Provide services in Geriatric Medicine including diagnosis, treatment and care for patients, both inpatient and outpatient.

2. In consultation with other clinical services assist with the management of the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) patients following referral.

3. Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs.

4. Undertake research in Geriatric Medicine

Essential Requirements

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
a) Crimes of Violence
b) Sex Related Offences
c) Serious Drug Offences
d) Crimes involving dishonesty
2. Identification check
3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check
