Job Description:
These positions are housed in the Department of Physical Therapy in the College of Public Health and Health
Professions and the McKnight Brain Institute. These positions are for a basic research generalist with a broad
background and skill set, including a thorough understanding of the regulations and acceptable practices
for animal research and a strong background in rodent procedures, including handling, tissue harvesting,
surgery and post-surgical care. These positions will be responsible for the execution of experimental studies
in support of laboratory goals and grants commitments, as well as provide assistance in organizing data,
performing statistical analysis, and preparation of tables/charts/graphs for presentation and publication.
The incumbents will work independently as a member of the laboratory staff and are expected to have an
understanding of basic molecular biology techniques. The incumbents will work with the laboratory
manager in all aspects of laboratory maintenance and operations, including maintaining laboratory,
records, equipment and supplies. Training fellows and students on laboratory techniques, animal
procedures, and general laboratory routines will also be required for the positions.
  • DATA COLLECTION - Execute experimental studies in support of lab goals and grant commitments. Assisting in all aspects of rodent research including meticulous record keeping, administration of treatments, general husbandry, cardiac perfusions and tissue harvests. Performing general molecular biology procedures including, but not limited to PCR, RT-PCR, western blots, DNA/RNA extraction and purification and ELISA. Prepare and process tissue samples for histology/immune-histological use. Acquisition and analysis of microscopy images.
  • TRAINING - Train students, fellows and other lab personnel in laboratory techniques.
  • DATA ANALYSES- Perform basic statistical data analysis; prepares tables/charts/graphs and assists in organizing data.
  • RECORD KEEPING - Meticulous record keeping of experiments and its daily progress using a data book supplied by the laboratory.
  • LABORATORY UPKEEP - Work with the laboratory manager in all aspects of laboratory management including, but not limited to, maintenance of supply levels, ensuring equipment condition and readiness, hazardous waste disposal, maintenance of records. Equipment trouble-shooting, repair, maintenance, and customization including such things as installing/maintaining tubing runs and fittings.
  • SUPERVISORY OVERSIGHT - Provide supervision of volunteers and students as directed by the primary investigator and/or Laboratory Manager
  • REGULATORY COMPLIANCE - Assist in creating and maintaining IACUC protocols using the UF IACUC online system
  • TECHNICAL WRITING - Assist in making presentations and contribute to preparation of manuscripts. Occasional presentation of data or papers during weekly laboratory meeting.
Expected Salary:

$44,700 - $65,000 commensurate with education, skills and experience.

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelors degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Masters degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Extended experience in managing research projects within a laboratory setting.
  • Working knowledge of basic software packages, such as Microsoft Office, GraphPad Prism, Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.
