Job Description:

The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Florida is seeking a Biological Scientist to serve in the role of Senior Formulation Scientist in the department’s RNA and GMP laboratories. The Senior Formulation Scientist will be responsible for executing formulation development projects and participating in all pre-formulation studies and formulation development for injectable delivery systems, including small molecules, RNA, DNA, and therapeutic proteins. Subject matter expert for identifying novel formulations, delivery technologies, and equipment capable of advancing the current standard of care to address unmet medical needs. The incumbent will be responsible for adherence to cost, quality, quantity and timeliness of all assigned tasks

The Lillian S. Wells Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Florida, College of Medicine is committed to providing comprehensive clinical services for the diagnosis, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients suffering from diseases of the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system, including brain tumors, aneurysms, stroke, epilepsy, functional disorders, and spinal disorders and injuries. Our clinical care mission also extends throughout North Central Florida through regional neurosurgery programs. We offer the full spectrum of neurosurgical and neuro-oncology treatment options for both adults and pediatric patients. Our research labs and investigator-led initiatives and clinical trials are developing promising new treatments for neurological diseases that are extremely difficult to treat with conventional therapies. The Department of Neurosurgery offers education and training programs such as ACGME-accredited neurosurgery residency programs and fellowship programs.

Design and execute formulation development bench work in support of Pre-Clinical, Phase I & II projects (DS characterization, solubilization studies, pH stability, excipient selection, lead formulation selection, R&D stability batches). Duties will include, but not be limited to:
•Conducting the physical/chemical characterization of all formulations with regard to solution/solid-state stability.
•Evaluates delivery technologies, novel formulation to deliver the research targets for unmet medical needs, and screening funnels to accelerate identification and advancement for the current standard of care for ophthalmic pharmaceuticals.
•Conduct studies thoroughly and completely in a technically sound and timely manner
•Evaluating and performing feasibility studies of new technologies and developing platforms to deliver dosage forms for continued top-line growth.
•Implements novel functional or cross-functional strategies to solve challenging issues.
•Mentors co-workers with the use of complex instrumentation (Lyo, Mixers, Zetasizer, and others) and routinely provide guidance to others on multiple projects.
•Conduct scientifically sound study designs for process development
•Identify and drive the implementation of new scientific technologies and approaches.

Prepare procedures/protocols and professional/technical reports and write scientific articles, publications and patents; may contribute to both internal and external publications. Duties will include, but not be limited to:
•Report and present scientific/technical results internally and publish/present externally in scientific journals and conferences including patents.
•Deliver results on time with high scientific rigor and quality
•Present scientific contributions in a logical manner in form of posters, presentations, patents or presentations
•May assume one or more responsibilities (specific activities) in the area of Science & Technology, and/or Device Development
•Documents written are of high quality and completed on target

Expected Salary:

$60,369-$68,238

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and seven years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and five years of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Strong communication skills, and ability to effectively interact with cross-functional teams.
•Conceptual understanding of pharmaceutical GLP, cGMP, ICH-QbD guidelines, intellectual property and regulatory requirements.
•Aware of industry best practices in analytical chemistry and helps set strategy for the function.
•Ability to exhibit and apply in-depth knowledge to creative technical problem-solving efforts
•Basic understanding of the physico-chemical aspects underlying disperse systems thermodynamic stability
