Job Description:

The College of Medicine is looking for an experienced industrial engineer to advance the science and practice of patient safety by combining established industrial engineering methods with novel AI tools. This position will support the University of Florida’s vision to become a national leader in the application of AI and will help transform the way health care is delivered at UF Health.

The incumbent will collaborate with teams of clinicians, data scientists, and quality improvement experts to develop and implement innovative programs involving adverse event prediction and prevention, discrete event and agent-based modeling, and systems integration in healthcare.

No prior healthcare experience is necessary; we are actively looking for those with experience in industrial engineering best practices in aerospace, defense, and adjacent industries.

The Opportunity

This position will report to the Associate Dean for AI Application and Innovation at the University of Florida College of Medicine as a key member of the AI/QI team. This position will have the opportunity to collaborate with teams of clinicians, data scientists, and quality improvement experts to develop and implement innovative programs involving adverse event prediction and prevention, discrete event and agent-based modeling, and systems integration in healthcare. Our University of Florida campus has incredible resources which allows for cross-and inter-disciplinary collaboration opportunities, especially with UF Health.

This role will:

  • Design and implement frameworks for applying discrete event models, agent-based models, and AI predictive models into existing UF Health processes to enhance health system operations and clinical decision support.
  • Apply lean principles and methods to develop standardized model and data frameworks to identify best practices in model development.
  • Work with Biostatistics and AI teams to develop specific data-driven models of clinical operations to better understand and improve clinical care at UF Health using frameworks.
  • Manage integration of healthcare data into real-time models and simulations of health system operations.
  • Manage industrial engineering projects through the project lifecycles and supervise students and trainees conducting pilot projects.
  • Report results to key stakeholders including executives, front-line clinicians, and QI communities.
  • Represent the AI/QI Program in professional development activities and present findings at regional, national, and international conferences.

Expected Salary:

$98,000 – $110,000; commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Masters degree in appropriate area of specialization and four years of relevant experience in industrial or systems engineering, or a Bachelors degree in appropriate area of specialization and six years of relevant experience in industrial or systems engineering; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Relevant experience includes demonstrated experience with predictive and prescriptive analytical methods, discrete event and agent-based modeling platforms, and project planning and management.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Six Sigma Certification
  • Familiarity with coding in R, Python
  • FE/PE passing score
  • Effective communication skills for interactions with stakeholders in leadership, trainees, and front-line clinical care
  • 7 – 10 years of experience in systems or safety engineering roles
