Job Description:

The Hastings Agricultural Extension Center (HAEC) is recruiting a research assistant for a project focused on phosphorous rate research in potatoes. This employment is contingent on a successful pre-employment screening which includes a review of criminal records, reference checks, and verification of education. In conjunction with education verification, an official copy of your Diploma for your highest degree must be submitted before the start of your employment.

The selected individual will perform both laboratory and field tasks at the HAEC farm and commercial farms in the area. The position requires working both indoors and outdoors according to the project requirements.

The outdoor tasks includes measuring and flagging research field plots, assisting with the equipment calibration and fertilizer treatment application, collecting soil and plant tissue samples, organizing, and accommodating soil and tissue samples at the dryer installations, installing and checking soil moisture sensors throughout the season, and assisting with mechanical potato harvest.

The indoor tasks includes preparing labels, organizing soil and plant sample bags, grinding tissue samples, preparing tissue and soil samples for shipment, assisting on the potato grading line, measuring specific gravity, evaluating internal and external tuber quality, and being knowledgeable on Microsoft office suite for data entry and record keeping.

Schedule is:

Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm.

Transportation assistance available from Gainesville, FL.

Expected Salary:

$16.00 per hour

Minimum Requirements:

High School Diploma

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree with major in Horticultural Sciences or an equivalent and experience in agricultural fieldwork.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of scientific research techniques, methods, and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of equipment used in related fields of research.
  • Considerable knowledge of health, safety, and security precautions in keeping with the type of research being done.
  • Ability to set up and operate research instrumentation and equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively with fellow researchers, staff members, faculty, supervisors, and students.
