Job Description:

Hospital in the home (HITH) registrar opportunities are available within the Department of General Medicine, Royal Hobart Hospital for 2023.

The RHH is a Level 3 teaching hospital and the largest hospital in Tasmania. It is the referral centre for numerous tertiary services for all of Tasmania.

The HITH program sits within the Department of General Medicine and provides care to a range of medical, surgical and sub-specialty patients who require acute medical management that can be deliver in the home environment.

The HITH programme was started in April 2020 and currently has 12 beds, and the service runs 7-days per week. At presents we are receiving 40 referrals a month, totalling up to 300 contact visits and average length of stay of 5 days. Our case mix and the age of our patients is broad. Patients are admitted from either inpatient wards or the emergency department at the Royal Hobart Hospital. Patients can also be admitted directly to the service from the community. These patients are then cared for in our Glenorchy clinic, their homes, or residential aged care facilities.

Our HITH registrar positions have accreditation with RACP for Basic Physician Training and also are suitable for GP trainees as the post is accredited with GP Training Tasmania. Accreditation with ACEM is in progress and is expected to be approved soon. This is an excellent position for emergency registrars who are interested in doing an elective rotation to a medical department. Registrars would have access to all teaching activities provided by the department of medicine including the BPT training program. This is in addition to the teaching provided to the HITH staff.

Greater Hobart and Tasmania offers an excellent lifestyle for those seeking a sea change. At the RHH, we pride ourselves in being able to combine that with the training and opportunities our registrars need to pursue each of their varied career goals in medicine
