Job Description:

The Department of Chemistry is seeking a Chemist III. This position is responsible for conducting experiments on samples submitted to the Mass Spectrometry Research and Education Center (MSREC), developing new sample preparation techniques and chromatographic protocols, interpreting data acquired in the lab, operating and maintaining mass spectrometers and auxiliary equipment (HPLC etc.), creates lab SOP’s, maintains EH&S required safety documents and proper safety procedures, and train students in sample preparation and self-operated instruments. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Operation of mass spectrometers and related auxiliary equipment (HPLC’s), scheduling maintenance or repair, performing routine maintenance and repair as appropriate, and ensuring proper tuning and calibrating are performed according to specific instrument requirements.

Conducts experiments on samples submitted to MSREC; assists graduate students/post-docs in the analysis of data and experiments under the supervision of the director; coordinates research findings and prepares detailed summaries for eventual submission of manuscripts for publication, and trains students in sample preparation and self-operated instruments.

Develops new experimental methods; researches information to make recommendations for review by the Director; and implements new techniques once approved by the Director.

Prepares samples for various MS analyses, including sample extraction, enzyme digestion, derivitization, and other sample preparation techniques as needed.

Writing, keeping, and creating any lab SOP’s, methods or protocols, and safety documents as required by EH&S.

Expected Salary:

The salary range is $52,500 - $56,000; commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a closely related field and seven years of relevant experience; or a master's degree in chemistry or a closely related field and five years of relevant experience; or Doctoral degree in chemistry or a closely related field and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:The successful candidate will have a minimum of a Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or equivalent combination of education and work experience. A Masters or PhD may be preferred. Ability in working with analytical sample preparation methods, analytical equipment and data analyses for biological and molecular samples is required. Experience with LC-MS and mass spectrometry is desired. Prefer experience in bioanalytical laboratory procedures, sample preparation, solution preparation and biological sample handling techniques. Ability to work independently in a multitask team-based environment with attention to detail, experience with Microsoft Office tools (Excel/Word/PowerPoint), and excellent written and verbal communications skills are required.
