Job Description:

This Biological Scientist position assigned to the University of Florida / Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) Everglades Research and Education Center (EREC) in Belle Glade, Florida with primary work station at the USDA-ARS Sugarcane Field Station in Canal Point, Florida has field, greenhouse, laboratory, and computer duties. The major research actives to be supported are to: 1. Conduct the final yield testing stage (Stage IV) of a cooperative sugarcane cultivar testing program; 2. Rate disease symptoms and collect plant and tissue samples; 3. Plant, map and maintain experimental populations of sugarcane; 4. Prepare tissue DNA samples for fingerprinting of Stage IV samples; 5. Operate sampling machinery, collect, tabulate and analyze data; and 6. Prepare reports for Stage IV and new released cultivars.

Participate in and coordinate aspects of Stage IV including conducting field ratings of plots for growth and disease ratings; run laboratory analyses and maintaining NIR for two mills (an old mill and a CPS); plant Stage IV tests on grower farms; managing large, complex spreadsheets; maintain Stage IV data in related data database; conduct statistical analyses of data; and develop tables as MS Word documents for annual reports.

Rate disease symptoms in field on naturally infected plants and in inoculated tests. Assist in collecting and processing samples for serological and molecular assays; assist scientists to collect agronomic data for sugarcane related research.

Plant, map, maintain and develop populations of sugarcane for research; this will entail collecting agronomic and disease evaluations on the individual clones (genotypes).

Collect, tabulate, maintain and analyze data at a team level for breeding and pathology program.

Expected Salary:

$21.63 hourly ($45,000 yearly).

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related life science field.

Valid FL Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization (agronomy or plant biology). Prior experience in agronomic row crops, agrochemicals, conducting field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments preferred.

Computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet, statistical software) required. Efficient communication skills (both oral and written) are necessary.
