Job Description:

The Diagnostic Imaging Technician at the University of Florida Veterinary Hospital provides support for the hospital by producing quality imaging while maintaining exemplary patient care in an efficient manner. These images with the interpretation from our radiologists will provide information to the referring veterinarian or specialist that will help determine a diagnosis for their patient. Our technicians work with all type of animals in both the large and small animal hospital. Individuals should genuinely care about people and animals, possess excellent communication skills, outgoing, full of enthusiasm and a team player.

An individual in this position must possess excellent communication skills and be proactive in determining the needs of the hospital. A successful applicant should enjoy learning new things and can quickly adapt to a changing environment. They need to possess a good base knowledge of veterinary medicine and express a positive attitude in their daily work. The individual must be able to communicate effectively, demonstrate critical thinking and professionalism.

Nursing Care 

The primary role of the technician is to support the hospital by producing quality imaging while maintaining exemplary patient care in an efficient manner. The technician will work under the direction of the Radiologists, Residents, and Veterinary Diagnostic Manager and follow all policies and procedures as directed. The expectation is that the individual will communicate effectively with services to determine needs and priorities for the day, display a positive and proactive attitude while also knowing when to ask for help or guidance when needed.  Patients should be handled compassionately with the goal to prevent and alleviate fear, anxiety, and stress during their visit. 

 Examples include, but are not limited to:  

  • Properly identify patients and safely transport patient in the hospitals
  • Weigh patients and ensure weights are accurate in the medical record and RIS
  • Safely administer sedation as needed following protocols and veterinarian’s orders while continuing to monitor patients while under your care.
  • Able to provide appropriate and safe monitoring to a patient under sedation
  • Maintain yearly training in CPR
  • Perform Digital Diagnostic Imaging Examinations with a high level of accuracy in large animal, small animal and post-operative areas.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and use of ALARA in regards to radiation safety.
  • Able to proficiently obtain acceptable images for the number of modalities for this level.
  • Documenting in electronic medical records 
  • Reviewing and entering patient charges appropriately 
  • Documentation and Scheduling 

Proper documentation is important for patient care. We expect our employees to be proactive when it comes to communication and scheduling to help facilitate the best needs of the patients and schedule. Our technicians need to be proficient in our hospital information systems especially the Radiology Information System. Patient records should be complete and proper information provided to all parties. Individuals must foster positivity, respect, and trust throughout their interactions, demonstrating proactivity in communication and scheduling to help facilitate the needs of the patients and schedule. Clients include owners, referring veterinarians, other department/service team members, and veterinary students. Delivery methods include orally, written, and in digital platforms. 

 Examples include, but are not limited to: 

  • Demonstrate the ability to proficiently work within the RIS (Radiology Information System) schedule
  • Obtain a working knowledge of the PACS (Imaged storage and viewing software.)
  • Assist hospital services when scheduling patients in the RIS system
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the functionality of the RIS in regards to patient flow.
  • Identify and resolve errors in the RIS order
  • Document accurately in the medical record sedation drugs administered to patient

Teaching and Mentoring 

The focus of teaching and mentoring is to provide an opportunity for others to learn by creating a safe and welcoming environment and building cohesive relationships amongst all individuals. Promoting further education and development is achieved by fostering teamwork, positivity, respect, and trust along with creating a culture of constructive dialogue by inviting thoughts and new ideas for discussion. Veterinary students, technician interns, shadowing technician students, assistants, and volunteers are all examples of individuals that can benefit from teaching and mentoring efforts. Delivery methods include orally, written, and in digital platforms. 

Examples include, but are not limited to: 

  • Instructing students and new team members including fellow technicians, assistants, and volunteers in technical skills and professionalism using a variety of teaching techniques 
  • Evaluating and monitoring progress and intervening when necessary to ensure their success 
  • Recognizing students that may be struggling with either technical skills or concepts and trying to assist and encourage them while also informing the faculty so they can assist 
  • Communicating in a warm and friendly manner to all parties of the patient care team and asking frequently: “how can I help?” 
  • Conducting teaching moments in structured orientations, rounds, or throughout the day on a one-on-one or group basis 
  • Help others with RIS orders and PACS use or by finding answers to questions that are not in your knowledge base by redirecting them to an appropriate person.

Hospital Cleanliness 

The focus of hospital cleanliness is to provide an uncompromising level of cleanliness throughout the facilities while creating a safe and accident-free environment. This will ensure the ability to maintain a productive, organized service in preparation to attend to clients and patients as well as preventing infection and cross contamination. The overall aesthetics of the hospital is a direct reflection on the high-quality care we provide so it is important the areas are kept in pristine condition. Areas to maintain include designated department/service treatment rooms and exams rooms along with communal areas when needed.  

 Examples include, but are not limited to: 

  • Sweeping and mopping floors daily and as needed 
  • Taking out trash and recyclables as needed 
  • Ensuring cages and runs including drains, grates, and doors are cleaned daily and as needed 
  • Assisting with processing laundry as needed 
  • Disinfecting and cleaning equipment regularly  
  • Maintaining equipment within the hospital as applicable to this position and reporting broken or malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate manager 
  • Reporting broken or malfunctioning infrastructure to the appropriate manager and requesting work orders as directed 
  • Maintaining inventory and replenishing stock on a regular basis 
  • Checking drug and supply expiration dates as needed 
  • Practicing appropriate infection control measures by managing biohazardous patient care items and lab specimens appropriately 

Professional Development & Continuing Education 

The focus of professional development & continuing education is to ensure an individual continues to increase and develop their knowledge and skills. To be successful an individual should take an active role such as utilizing downtime in continuing their education, especially in the field of veterinary technology.  

Requirements include, but are not limited to:  

  • Attending technician staff meetings 
  • Attending service meetings 
  • Attending hospital wide meetings or at least reviewing associated meeting minutes 
  • Attending or completing in-service training sessions when directed 
  • Obtaining CE credit requirements as associated with the various facility accreditations (AAHA, VECCS, AAFP): 
  • AAHA: Obtain 7.5 hours of veterinary continuing education annually for non-credentialed technicians or 10 hours of veterinary continuing education annually for credentialed technicians
  • Upholding yearly compliance requirements by completing various policy reviews, in-person training sessions, and computer-based training modules on a yearly or biennial basis 

Normal Work Schedule  

May require working earlier then 8:00 a.m. or later than 5:00 p.m. 

Schedule may change due to covering other shifts and it may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital depending on patient care needs. 

Individual is considered essential personnel which may include reporting to work during Main Campus closures.

Individual required to participate in on-call for the service.

Some weekend duty may be required.

Advertised Salary:

$16.50-$20/hour, pay based on credentials and relevant experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging Technician I: High school diploma or equivalent and three years of appropriate experience or college coursework in a related field.

Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging Technician II: Associate's degree and two years of appropriate experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Credentials in a related field such as Veterinary Technology or Radiologic Technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduate from an accredited American Veterinary Medical Association program for veterinary technology or The American Registry of Radiologic Technologist

Credentialed veterinary Technician OR Registered Radiological Technologist
