Job Description:

Ensembl is seeking a manager for our collection of outreach activities. Ensembl (http://www.ensembl.org) develops free, comprehensive genome data services for a worldwide audience, distributing gene and genome data through an online genome browser and publicly accessible databases and APIs.

Ensembl Outreach is responsible for training and supporting our users from experimental laboratory scientists to bioinformaticians, and is part of the Genomics Technology Infrastructure team, supporting several resources including Ensembl, Ensembl Genomes and the International Genome Sample Resource (IGSR).  

The Ensembl Outreach Manager will lead four Outreach Officers, who are involved in teaching, training and helping Ensembl users. Ensembl Outreach responsibilities include:   In addition the Outreach Manager will be responsible for: The post holder will report to the Genomics Technology Infrastructure Team Leader.  

The successful candidate should have a PhD or equivalent experience in bioinformatics, molecular biology, genetics or a related discipline. They should have experience planning and delivering training in an academic and/or industrial environment. They should be familiar with commonly-used online bioinformatics tools and resources.

You are expected to have excellent English communication skills; written and verbal, both to facilitate effective internal communications as well as with external collaborators and users. The selected candidate should also work well as a part of a team and should be comfortable delivering presentations and workshops both online and at scientific institutes worldwide.

You must be highly self-motivated and be able to work independently with a high level for attention to detail, be capable of delivering to deadlines, able to delegate and prioritise tasks.  

Experience in managing people or projects would be highly advantageous. Technical bioinformatics skills would be very helpful, especially if the candidate has also taught them. Useful skills include: Any experience in teaching, training, public outreach, online help, customer service or planning events, in or out of science, will be considered in your application.
