Scientific Writing:
Uses basic science and agriculture understanding to: interview IFAS faculty to develop content that is expected to be distributed as; (1) website and blog content for the Dean for Research; (2) shared via social media outlets; and/or published in printed media; and/or utilized as spoken content for speeches or special events sponsored by the Dean for Research office including the annual Research Awards Ceremony. Collaborate with the IFAS Communications Services team to identify stories for news outreach, and build relationships with other science writers/bloggers across Florida and the nation.

Graphic Design:
Uses tools to create information and graphics to depict data, trends, and analysis related to IFAS’s research enterprise, applying appropriate university and unit branding.

Creating and Managing Web Content:
Understands and uses content management systems and blog platforms to share scientific stories and update information used on the UF/IFAS Dean for Research web site, social media, as well as the web sites managed by the office, including PSREU (Plant Science Research and Education Unit) and OSBS (Ordway-Swisher Biological Station). Employee is expected to be able to work with video and photos to enhance the site accordingly.

Special projects as assigned by the UF/IFAS Dean(s) for Research.

Directly supervised by the UF/IFAS Dean for Research or his/her designee. This employee is expected to work independently with limited guidance from the Dean (or designee) and use their discretion to seek direction when it is needed given the complexity of the activity.

Expected Salary:

$48,000-$57,000 per year, plus benefits

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and at least 2 years of appropriate experience.

  • Demonstrate commitment to contributing to a respectful and caring community for all, including individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientation, and perspectives.

  • Knowledge of ADA compliant document creation preferred.

  • Experience communicating science to stakeholder audiences. Creativity and imagination are highly desired. Website management experience is desirable, particularly using CMS. Video and photography experience a plus. Must be able to demonstrate social media expertise. Prefer a highly motivated, independent worker.
