Job Description:

The RHH is Tasmania’s major trauma centre and is designated as a Level 6 facility in the Tasmanian Role Delineation Framework. This means that RHH is required to provide the full spectrum of care for injured patients, spanning multiple specialties across all phases of care, including pre-hospital, emergency, intensive care, surgery, medicine, and rehabilitation. As a Level 6 facility, RHH sees over 260 major traumas per year.

We are entering an exciting period of trauma system development in Tasmania. From February 2023, all major trauma will be admitted under a single bed card which will be responsible for the multidisciplinary management of injured patients. We aim to create a diverse and inclusive team, welcoming trauma registrars from a variety of clinical backgrounds

Trauma Registrars will gain a broad range of experience in all areas of trauma care and practice. Registrars will participate in daily consultant-led ward rounds and will work closely with the trauma case management team to ensure all patients receive timely, effective, holistic care. Registrars will also attend trauma calls and will become proficient in team based initial assessment and resuscitation of major trauma patients. Additionally, registrars will have the opportunity to participate in the trauma outpatient clinic. The trauma service aims to be a supportive learning environment and there will be weekly protected teaching for all staff.

Senior registrars may be employed full time with the trauma service or may divide their time between trauma and their primary specialty, by negotiation. Senior registrars will also participate in trauma calls, ward rounds and outpatient clinics, but with graded autonomy to support a transition to consultant practice. Additionally, senior registrars will contribute to the teaching roster and will be expected to negotiate a research or quality improvement project that they wish to undertake during their trauma rotation.

Applicants are advised that in accordance with Tasmanian Public Health Directions, all employees of the Department of Health must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This step is critical in protecting both our health workforce and vulnerable Tasmanians in our care.
