Core Research Facility Specialist II

Job Description:

Technical

  • Analysis of submitted customer samples on Flow Cytometers such as BD Fortessa, BD Symphony A3, BD Canto II, BD Accuri C6 or any Spectral Flow Cytometer
  • Cell Sorting of customer samples on a BD ARIA or Sony SH800
  • Training of users on self-service flow Cytometers and confocal microscopes
  • Provide technical support to self-users; assist with trouble shooting, repairing, and testing of flow cytometers, sorters, and other equipment.
  • Perform daily routine equipment calibration and maintenance according to established SOP
  • Perform data analysis for researchers using specialized data analysis software
  • Provide consultation and support for grant applications and publication
  • Arrange for preventative maintenance and required repairs of instruments.

Customer Support

  • Serve as primary point of contact to customers
  • Answer emails for customers in a timely fashion
  • Perform administrative duties including data delivery, customer consultation, and billing log preparation and log conversion for upload into ilab
  • Provide education, training, and consultation to users/customers in cytometric methodologies and confocal imaging techniques
  • Prepare Project Statement of Work documents defining deliverables and timelines
  • Coordinate sample receipt from customers and data delivery
  • Coordinate delivery of samples to other ICBR Cores for further analysis
  • Provide expert consultation and advice to assist users on best practices in flow cytometry including biological sample preparation and data analysis
  • Performs administrative duties necessary for a fee-for-service facility operation including invoicing and data delivery.
  • Reviews and/or recommends specifications for new equipment or renovation projects
  • Help with marketing and strategic plans for increasing awareness of core facility services
  • Prepare proper ilab billing logs for customer usage billing
  • Independently solve or assist in solving technical problems related to routine experiments, either in the preparation or analysis of samples and data
  • Develop new data analysis techniques or methodology
  • Independently conceive, design and carry-out experiments for purposes of developing new staining techniques and analytical procedures for the flow cytometer.
  • Assist in design of new Flow core workshops and training programs

Laboratory Management and Safety

  • Train laboratory staff in carrying out routine laboratory tasks.
  • Participate in hiring staff and managing staff performance to assure staff is compliant with UF policies and procedures
  • Ensure compliance with Environmental Health and Safety and other institutional and governmental regulations
  • Adhere to University of Florida Environmental Health and Safety compliance guidelines
  • Monitor and maintain laboratory supply inventory
  • Clean/autoclave lab glassware, supplies and biohazardous trash

Other duties as directed

Expected Salary:

$52,000 - $57,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

MS required or 7 years science related, core specific advanced training and work experience and/or post-graduate coursework. Requires at least 3 years in core facility specific applications and at least 2 years of that in research-based technology. Work experience in multi-user core facility preferred. Core or technology specific licensure and/or certifications where applicable. Additionally yearly certificate and compliance training if required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • M.S/PhD in Cell Biology, Biotechnology, Immunology or related discipline. 2-5 years of Bench work experience in flow cytometry and microscopy imaging. Experience in proper flow cytometry instrument operations using Beckton Dickenson (BD) platforms
  • Preferred experience in Confocal imaging techniques and sample mounting; experience in troubleshooting sample preparation and labeling
  • Familiarity with Flowjo 10.7 software or FCS express 7.0 software
  • Excellent organizational skills; exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working on highly functioning teams.
  • Work experience in multi-user core facility.
  • Computer literacy in Windows, Microsoft Office package.
  • Familiarity with Standard Operating Procedures
  • Familiarity with CrossLab Fiscal software, and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
