Medicine Full-time

Job Description:

Medical Registrar opportunities are available within the Department of General Medicine, Royal Hobart Hospital for 2023.

The RHH is both the Community Hospital of Greater Hobart as well as the State-wide referral centre for numerous tertiary services for all of Tasmania. The RHH is a Level 3 teaching hospital.

Our medical registrar positions provide opportunities for those seeking accredited Basic Physician Training. We pride ourselves on a strong BPT training programme- supported by our Director of Physician Education and by Physicians throughout the hospital with an exemplary track record of success for our FRACP candidates. For those BPTs who require it in order to meet College Training needs, we have some opportunities for a subspecialty rotation in Cardiology, as well as a regional rotation to the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie.

Our Medical Registrar positions can also provide medical training opportunities for suitable applicants from non-BPT pathways including those with backgrounds in Critical Care or with a longer-term interest in Community Primary Care. In addition, we have opportunities for applicants to join the Hospital at Home team, including those on the General Practice Program.

The Department of General and Internal Medicine is the largest inpatient medical unit at the RHH. On average, we admit 15-20 patients each day across 6 General Medical teams.

Medical Registrars are involved in the full spectrum of Acute Care from admission to discharge with the support of a multi-disciplinary team

Presently the Department of General Medicine has 16 Staff Specialists, mostly in part-time roles. Each unit has two Basic Training Registrars and 2 Junior Medical Officers (Intern or RMO), and 2-3 consultants.

We also currently have training opportunities and positions for Advanced Trainee Registrars in General Medicine- which is ideal for those who have completed BPT requirements and are interested in pursuing a career as a General Physician (or in Dual Training alongside another area of interest).

There are now 9 Advanced Training positions in General Medicine at the RHH, rotating through General Medicine and other sub-specialty positions such as stroke, respiratory medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology, and nephrology.

Greater Hobart and Tasmania offers an excellent lifestyle for those seeking a sea change. At the RHH, we pride ourselves in being able to combine that with the training and opportunities our registrars need to pursue each of their varied career goals in medicine.

Applicants are advised that in accordance with Tasmanian Public Health Directions, all employees of the Department of Health must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This step is critical in protecting both our health workforce and vulnerable Tasmanians in our care.
