Job Description:

The Department of Geological Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Florida is seeking an Engineer I. This position’s primary responsibility is to assure smooth operation and maintenance of the department’s mechanical equipment, systems, and physical plant, including research equipment, teaching equipment, inventory control, and vehicles. The position also involves instrument and equipment design and fabrication responsibilities. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Design and develop specialized scientific instrumentation and sampling devices. Design and develop methods of operation for these instruments. Develop cost estimates, specify vendors, and fabricate research apparatus. Produce shop sketches, mechanical drawings for the fabrication of components, and documentation of projects. Perform sophisticated machining and fabrication operations.

Responsible for the repair and maintenance of all mechanical teaching and research equipment. Maintain teaching and research optical microscopes including precision cleaning and alignment. Evaluate purchasing documents and proposals from outside vendors for cost-effectiveness and fabrication capabilities. Assist students in the safe operation of tools and facilities.

Develop plans and scope for building renovations and repairs, which involves initiating, overseeing, and following up on projects with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Facilities and Operations Manager, UF Facilities Services: Planning Design and Construction (PDC), Environmental Health and Safety, and outside contractors. Provide design input and review construction plans for renovations to building and laboratory space. This includes reviewing plans for cleanroom construction with a focus on fume hoods, ventilation, and HVAC. Coordinate building and utility maintenance with PDC. Perform scheduled maintenance on the Department’s mechanical equipment including the rock processing lab (rock crushers and grinders) and fume hoods (fans and filters).

Responsible for oversight, scheduling, and arranging maintenance of the vehicles (through UF Motor Pool) used for teaching and research. Assist in the specification and acquisition of vehicles to be used for field trips and mobile laboratories, including customization and equipment upgrades.

Direct and maintain inventory control in a manner consistent with University regulations.

Miscellaneous duties to ensure effective operation of the department. These activities may involve field work and servicing of remote instrumentation. Other duties as assigned.

Advertised Salary:

$55,000 - $62,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma or equivalent and four years of relevant experience; or Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area.

Preferred Qualifications:

High school diploma and 8 years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Effective written and oral communication skills.

Experience with hand and machine tools in a shop and field environment.

Experience with scientific instruments and equipment.
