Job Description:

The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) vacancy, with experience in the management of high risk pregnancies and obstetric ultrasound.

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania, and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine. The Hospital provides most specialist medical services for the region or state.

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at the Royal Hobart Hospital
provides clinical services to the highest possible standard to women patients and their families.

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.


Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.

Period of Employment

Permanent full-time day work (with on-call), working 76 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible.


Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, Royal Hobart Hospital


  1. Provide services to Obstetrics (and Gynaecology) including diagnosis, treatment and care of patients at the Royal Hobart Hospital, both inpatient and outpatient.

  2. Care for high risk pregnancies. Participation in the obstetric endocrine and high risk obstetric antenatal clinics. Both are multidisciplinary clinics providing care for pregnant women with medical comorbidities, multiple pregnancies, fetal abnormalities, preterm birth prevention and the management of fetal growth restriction.

  3. Participation in obstetric ultrasound including fetal growth and Doppler studies, and ultrasound guided procedures, such as amniocentesis and chorionic villous sampling.

  4. There may be a general gynaecological component to the duties of this position, pending the successful candidate’s interest and scope of practice.

  5. Undergraduate curriculum development and teaching.

  6. Participation in post-graduate teaching of resident medical officers and registrars.

  7. Undertake research in areas of Obstetrics (and Gynaecology).

  8. Participate in out of hours’ on-call roster for inpatients and emergency patients referred by GPs, the Emergency Department or other departments, and overseeing the care of antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum women after hours when rostered.

  9. Participate in rostered daily service to oversee and support junior medical staff in Obstetrics (and Gynaecology).

Essential Requirements

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
1. Conviction checks in the following areas:
a) Crimes of Violence
b) Sex Related Offences
c) Serious Drug Offences
d) Crimes involving dishonesty
2. Identification check
3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience in obstetric ultrasound and the management of high risk pregnancies with either CMFM subspecialty qualification from RANZCOG or Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound (DDU) from ASUM
  • Recognition as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist by the completion of Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG) training or equivalent
