The Junior Device Processing Engineer will be employed by UNSW to work with world-leading atomic electronics and quantum computing teams at Silicon Quantum Computing Pty Limited (SQC).
The Junior Device Processing Engineer is part of the Nanoscale Cleanroom Processing team and reports to Professor Michelle Simmons AO and the Lead Processing Scientist. The team collaborates with atomic-scale device fabrication engineers and scientists to help implement efficient device manufacturing processes of high yield and quality. This role will support the overall fabrication of globally unique quantum computer processors.
About the role
- Fixed Term – 2 years
- Full-time (35 hours per week)
The Junior Device Processing Engineer is part of the Nanoscale Cleanroom Processing team and reports to Professor Michelle Simmons. The position will also work closely with the Lead Processing Scientist and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
LEVEL 5:
- Assist in the reproducible execution of device fabrication processes on a day-to-day basis.
- Support the implementation of the atomic-scale device fabrication process for improved device metrics and high yield.
- Undertake detailed recording of individual process steps for optimisation and improvement and provide thorough reports.
- Work closely with clean-room managers, scientists and engineers to maintain the clean-room processing equipment in optimal working condition.
- Provide technical assistance to new staff and students working on the current process.
- Practice safe systems including OH&S, hazardous substances, risk assessments and conformance with AS’s codes.
- Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.
LEVEL 6:
In addition to the above
- Drive the reproducible execution of device fabrication processes on a day-to-day basis.
- Train new staff and students working on the current process.
- Responsible for the maintenance of cleanroom equipment.
- Implement safety systems including OH&S, hazardous substances, risk assessments and conformance with AS’s codes.
About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)
LEVEL 5:
To be successful in this role you will have:
- An undergraduate or Master’s degree in Science, Engineering, or a relevant discipline, and/or experience in semiconductor clean room processing, including specifically the use of electron beam lithography and atomic force microscopy.
- Experience in acid etching (including HF etching), dry etching, metal evaporation, annealing, resist spinning, silicon cleaving, bonding and characterisation by optical and scanning electron and capacitive microscopy.
- Experience of teamwork in a fab environment.
- Experience in troubleshooting fabrication issues.
- Well-organised, attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
LEVEL 6:
In addition to the above:
- Significant work experience in semiconductor clean room processing, including specifically the use of electron beam lithography and atomic force microscopy.
- Significant experience in developing semiconductor device fabrication recipes and problem-solving issues.
- Experienced in the maintenance and repair of cleanroom laboratory equipment and systems.
